The former First Lady Michelle Obama teamed up with a list of celebrities and influencers to sign an open letter pushing for voting rights.

When We All Vote and March On For Voting Rights joined forces in an open letter demanding that Congress pass a federal voting rights legislation. Essence reported that this was in response to the over 400 bills that have been introduced in legislatures nationwide, with Republicans saying that they would promote election integrity. Democrats, however, have argued that these bills are racist and aim to suppress voting.

Michelle, who is the co-chair of When We All Vote, and over 70 celebrities responded with this letter in which they urged Americans to march, call, email and use social media to contact U.S. Senators. Celebrities who signed the letter include Al Sharpton, Alicia Keys, Taraji P. Henson, and Shaquille O’Neal.

“We are facing a coordinated national attack on our voting rights and our democracy is at stake,” claimed Stephanie L. Young, Executive Director of When We All Vote. “We are not going to let that happen. `When We All Vote’ will continue to mobilize our community to fight for every American’s right to vote. That fight starts with urging the Senate to take up and pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the For the People Act.”

Michelle Teams Up With Stacey Abrams

Earlier this month, Michelle teamed up with failed gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams to call for legislation that would advance the federal takeover of elections, eliminating voter ID laws.

“Our democracy and our vote — the very foundation of this nation and the most powerful tools we have as citizens are under attack,” Abrams said, with Michelle adding, “Right now, dangerous legislation is being proposed across the country that limits the freedom to vote, cast our ballots, and have our votes counted.”

“Many of these proposals would disproportionately impact black, brown, young, and working-class voters, and voters with disabilities,” Abrams continued.

“We’re working to change the future of this nation,” Michelle said. “It’s not gonna be easy, but nothing this important ever is.”

“Are you in?” Michelle and Abrams say at the end of the video.
