The images and videos coming out of Mexico are hard to watch. A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the center part of the country yesterday, and the damage is still being assessed.
Now we have heart-breaking news that the death toll has climbed to over 200. The current estimate is at least 225 deaths. Over half of those deaths occurred in the nation’s capital, Mexico City.
The rescue effort is underway, as emergency personnel still work to rescue survivors:

The most tragic news of all was that least 20 children were killed in a school collapse. Here is the incredible footage of children being rescued from the ruins:

And here is raw footage of the rescue effort being undertaken later at the scene:

These videos and images may be hard to watch, but they contain a learning lesson: Earthquakes should be taken seriously. If you’re in an area prone to them, you should always be aware of what steps to take should they strike.
The below graphic from NBC shows the exact location of the earthquake, and the quake that struck the southern part of the country just a few weeks ago:
Yesterday, President Trump sent some encouraging words to the people of Mexico:
God bless the people of Mexico City. We are with you and will be there for you.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 19, 2017
We echo President Trump’s message. Whatever differences we have, this is a human tragedy. The estimated damage from the quake will likely be in the billions of dollars. And that doesn’t even account for the tragic loss of life.
Our hearts go out to the people of Mexico who are suffering from this disaster.
