Hypocrisy, thy name is Meryl.
After largely ignoring and excusing the revelations of a culture of sexual misconduct in the entire entertainment industry, Meryl Streep is finally speaking out….. against the Trumps.
According to the Washington Examiner, “award-winning actress Meryl Streep took a shot at first lady Melania Trump and White House adviser Ivanka Trump for their “silence” on sexual harassment during an interview with the New York Times published Wednesday.”
What was the context? She was asked about her own silence about the accusations against her longtime friend Harvey Weinstein.

“I don’t want to hear about the silence of me. I want to hear about the silence of Melania Trump. I want to hear from her. She has so much that’s valuable to say. And so does Ivanka. I want her to speak now,” Streep responded. The president’s daughter told an audience in Tokyo in November that sexual harassment of women in the workplace should “never be tolerated.”
I guess Streep was going for the “well if the President did it, why can’t I?” defense that Al Franken used on with this? The difference being that the accusations against President Trump have remained just accusations, while Franken and Weinstein acknowledged wrongdoing.
When President Trump hasn’t acknowledged any wrongdoing, what is his family supposed to do? Condemn the man, anyway? I suppose that’s what Meryl was going for, but it’s pretty hard to condemn someone merely accused with no evidence who hasn’t acknowledged any wrongdoing themselves. It also doesn’t help that Democrats were offering hundreds of thousands of dollars to women to come forward with such accusations.
Meanwhile, not only did Weinstein acknowledge (some) wrongdoing, we even have audio of him in the act, plus years of openly joking about what was an open secret in the industry.

And unlike Ivanka and Melania, who have not been accused of covering up their farther’s alleged abuse, Streep faces more serious charges. In fact, just in the past few weeks a right-wing artist has been decorating Los Angeles with posters that show Streep with a red stripe across her face and the text “She knew,” while she stands next to Harvey Weinstein.
Isn’t there an old saying that those in glass houses shouldn’t be throwing stones?
