Let’s be honest: it’s not hard to upstage Hillary Clinton. But First Lady Melania Trump upstaged Clinton in a major way with her outfit choice for President Donald Trump’s first State of the Union address.
Melania has become a veritable fashion icon since assuming her role as First Lady, and she never fails to look the picture of poise and elegance. The State of the Union was no different: Melania looked chic and professional in an all-white Christian Dior ensemble with a pair of beige Christian Louboutin stilettos.

However, Melania isn’t exactly known for wearing pantsuits – she’s more known for wearing show-stealing designer dresses and the color pink. Who is known for wearing pantsuits is Hillary Clinton. In fact, the outfit Melania wore to the State of the Union is strikingly similar to the one Clinton wore to Trump’s inauguration, right down to the beige-colored heels.

But did Melania make a conscious decision to dress so similarly to Clinton? Liberals certainly seem to think so. According to Vanessa Friedman, fashion director and chief fashion critic for The New York Times, Melania chose to don the white pantsuit as a “subtle slap in the face” to Trump in response to his alleged affair with porn star Stormy Daniels. Indeed, Friedman writes that the pantsuit, specifically in the color white, has “become widely accepted as sartorial shorthand for both the suffragists and contemporary women’s empowerment and something of an anti-Trump uniform.”
However, while it’s rumored that Melania has been keeping her distance from Trump following news of the affair, chances are that she simply wore the white pantsuit in effort to stand out among the sea of black worn by the Democratic Women’s Working Group. Further, female members of the GOP were urged to dress in red, white, and blue (for her part, Friedman does note both these points). So in reality, it’s likely that Melania’s outfit choice was showing solidarity with her husband rather than demonstrating subtle defiance.
And it just so happens that she looked way better than Clinton while doing it.
