Maroon 5 Avoids Politics — and Entertainment — During Super Bowl Halftime Show

Marooon 5 managed to avoid political preaching during its Super Bowl LIII halftime show — but the band also forgot to be entertaining.

The group ran through its biggest hits, including “Girls Like You” and “She Will Be Loved” — while lead singer Adam Levine barely moved on stage and eventually worked his way to a shirtless performance.

Guest performers included rappers Travis Scott and Big Boi. Scott had to be bleeped several times, presumably because he was swearing — but it was hard to tell because he basically mumbled into a microphone for about a minute and then disappeared. Big Boi, meanwhile, was on stage in a meme-worthy fur coat and sang one song before also disappearing.

At one point Levine invited a mostly African-American church group to sing with him — presumably to push back on criticism against a white band from California being chosen to perform in Atlanta, Georgia — but that group also disappeared after about a minute.

Compared to the energy bands like The Rolling Stones have brought to the Super Bowl stage in previous years and the incredible production values musicians like Lady Gaga have put forth, Maroon 5 was just … boring.

Another disappointing part of the performance was the lack of Spongebob Squarepants, the popular animated character. There was a petition to have the cartoon character play “Sweet Victory” — a rock song from the show — during halftime, but Maroon 5 instead only showed a small clip from the show leading up to “Sweet Victory” before giving the world … Travis Scott.

The petition, by the way, had over 1.2 million signatures.

Some predicted the band would get political with its performance and the world is thankful it didn’t, but the group could have been entertaining, too.

Fans weren’t all that impressed and expressed disappointment through social media.
