VP Pence Breaks Senate Tie on Defunding Planned Parenthood

Get ready for liberals to hate Mike Pence a heck of a lot more than they already do.

Today Pence got to cast the tie-breaking vote on a pro-life procedural motion in the Senate. They’re working on a bill that would allow the Trump administration to axe Obama-era rules that blocked states from defunding abortion providers. The Obama-era rules were in response to attempts to defund Planned Parenthood at the state-level following a number of controversies at the clinics.

After the vote had stalled at a 50-50 tie, Pence came to the rescue:

Republicans are using the Congressional Review Act (CRA) to roll back some Obama-era regulations with only a simple majority vote.

Former President Obama’s rule required that state and local governments distribute federal Title X funding for services related to contraception, fertility, pregnancy care and cervical cancer screenings to health providers, regardless of whether they also preform abortions.

Republican Sens. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) and Susan Collins (Maine) joined all Democrats in voting against ending debate on the bill.

Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.), who has been recovering from two back surgeries and hasn’t voted since Feb. 17, returned to the Senate to cast a vote, creating the tie that led to Pence’s vote.

Leadership held the vote open for roughly an hour as they rounded up enough votes to move forward. A final vote on getting rid of the Obama-era rule could happen as early as Thursday afternoon.

H/T: The Hill

Democrats quickly attacked Republicans, even though they were perfectly within the rules of the Senate and using Pence to break the tie on the vote.  It wouldn’t have even been necessary if Sen. Isakson had been present.

And of course, we heard the usual comments about men making decisions about women’s health, when in reality the issue here is how abortions are paid for.

Everyone who wants Planned Parenthood defunded wants those funds to go to other organizations that provide similar services – minus abortion. It’s amazing how happy liberals are to conflate “abortion” with “women’s health.” It certainly isn’t healthcare for the half of abortion victims that are women.

By the way, if men can’t have an opinion on issues like abortion because they’ll never have one, does this also mean that people who don’t own guns can’t make rules regulating them?

On second thought, I’m OK with liberal logic if we can make that compromise. Well, maybe not.

But you get the point.
