Newly leaked video footage shows former Fox News host Tucker Carlson interviewing Steven Sund, the chief of the Capitol Police at the time of the January 6th riot, in which the latter claims “everything appears to be a cover-up.”

Sund’s claims are shocking, and if true, counter many narratives put forth by the media surrounding what happened prior to the events that day and afterwards.

Carlson, in a conversation with comedian Russell Brand last month, said he had interviewed Sund but the segment never aired on Fox because “I was fired before it could air.”

His takeaway from the Sund interview was an allegation that the crowd on January 6th was “filled with agents.”

“Filled” is a subjective term and while The Political Insider can’t verify such a claim, we have reported extensively that the FBI had, according to multiple reports, numerous informants working with groups involved in the Capitol riot prior to that fateful day.

Sund Tells Carlson About Alleged January 6th ‘Cover Up’

Newsweek is reporting on a leaked video of the interview with Sund in which he makes several startling claims regarding his knowledge of the events of January 6th.

Sund resigned following the Capitol riot when then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) called on him to step down. In prior assessments of what took place, he hasn’t exactly used phrases associated with a right-wing conspiracy theorist, describing the riot as an “armed insurrection.”

Newsweek reports that the interview with Sund, originally obtained by The National Pulse, shows Sund “believed officials were aware of the January 6 U.S. Capitol insurrection before it happened and covered it up.”

The ex-Capitol Police chief described being “pissed off” about what transpired and alleged if he was allowed to do his job things might have turned out differently.

“This didn’t have to happen,” he maintained. “Everything appears to be a cover-up.”

Claims Requests For National Guard Help Were Squashed

In the unaired Fox News interview with Carlson, Sund also alleges that he was “denied” backup from the National Guard.

“Like I said, I’m not a conspiracy theorist,” Sund asserts.

“But when you look at the information and intelligence they had, the military had, it’s all watered down. I’m not getting intelligence, I’m denied any support from National Guard in advance,” he continued. “I’m denied National Guard while we’re under attack, for 71 minutes…”

In his book “Courage Under Fire,” published earlier this year, Sund claimed that three days prior to the Capitol riot, he had asked the National Guard to be placed on standby. He was allegedly rejected by the two Sergeants at Arms for the House and Senate.

It would be three hours before National Guard troops would be mobilized according to a report from NPR.

In this leaked interview, Sund shockingly suggests some sort of political motivation behind holding back National Guard support.

“Could there possibly be actually… they kind of wanted something to happen?” he asked.

“It’s not a far stretch to begin to think that,” Sund continued. “It’s sad when you start putting everything together and thinking about the way this played out… what was their end goal?”

Supporters of former President Donald Trump have suggested the “end goal” was just played out in the form of Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigation. The investigation led to Trump’s indictment on charges related to 2020 election interference and the Capitol riot.

Earlier this year, a top lawyer investigating January 6th indicated that the FBI and other intelligence agencies could have prevented the chaos had they acted on the information that had been gathered by informants.

“What happened at the Capitol was also affected by law enforcement failures to operationalize the ample intelligence that was present before Jan. 6, about the threats of violence,” former federal prosecutor Tim Heaphy said in an interview with NBC.

“Law enforcement had a very direct role in contributing to the security failures that led to the violence,” he added.

Previous reporting described an informant who warned the FBI weeks in advance that January 6th posed a “big” threat of violence, but was ultimately ignored.

That informant reportedly highlighted an uptick in messages speaking of Civil War and a willingness to sacrifice lives prior to the riot.

“The bureau saw this coming,” the informant accused.

Conservative commentator Jason Howerton said he does not subscribe to the theory that the government had a role in what happened on January 6th, but pointed out that Sund is a “credible source” and that the interview with Carlson “does make me wonder” if  things were “allowed to get out of control for political reasons.”

Were resources and information pulled back prior to and during the January 6th riot for political reasons? Or was this all just one big catastrophic failure by the intelligence community and the Capitol Police?
