Ilhan Omar Points To Police ‘Not Fulfilling Their Oath’ As Reason For Rise In Violent Crime

Representative Ilhan Omar blamed police officers for a rise in violent crime in Minneapolis, saying they are not fulfilling their oath to the citizens of the city.

Representative Ilhan Omar blamed police officers for a rise in violent crime in Minneapolis, Minnesota this past weekend, saying law enforcement officers are not fulfilling their oath to the citizens of the city.

Omar, perhaps one of the strongest proponents for defunding or even abolishing the entire Minneapolis police department, made the curious comments at a town hall event this past weekend.

“What we must also recognize is that the reduction in policing currently in our city and the lawlessness that is happening is due to two things,” the Democrat congresswoman said.

Ilhan Omar Blames Police For Spike In Violent Crime

The first of her two reasons is that “the police have chosen to not fulfill their oath of office and to provide the public safety they are owed to the citizens they serve.”

For her second reason, Representative Ilhan Omar again points to the police.

In particular, she says that, , in her view, law enforcement is still not being held accountable for their actions.

“The Minneapolis Police Department is the most dysfunctional in our state and probably in the country,” she said.

Accountability, she claims, is something “that doesn’t exist in this moment.”

In sum, Omar puts the full blame for the rise in violent crime in Minneapolis squarely on the shoulders of its police force.

Crime Rates In Minnesota Surge

Violent crime in the Gopher State saw a 17 percent surge in 2020, including a record number of murders.

Minnesota, according to the annual Uniform Crime Report, recorded 185 murders in 2020, a 58 percent spike from 117 total the year before.

The number of arsons, according to the statistics, also rose 54 percent in Minnesota, while there was also a spike in carjackings.

But that is the fault of the police, you see. It certainly could not be the fault of the criminals. Or a diminished ability to police brought forth by ‘defund the police’ advocates such as Omar.

Omar Says Minneapolis Did Not ‘Defund the Police’

Omar also told the town hall attendees that the narrative that Democrats are defunding the police is a lie.

“I know that there are people who are lying, who are saying we’ve somehow defunded the police,” she said. “That is not the case. The police have been given more money.”

That certainly isn’t for lack of trying.

In fact, on November 2nd, a ballot measure will be up for a vote to replace the entire Minneapolis police department with a “Department of Public Safety.”

And Omar, as you might imagine, strongly supports the effort.

“We have an opportunity, once and for all, to listen to those most impacted by police brutality and the communities who have been demanding change for decades,” Omar wrote in a Star Tribune op-ed.

“We have a mandate, in the wake of George Floyd’s murder, to deliver a public safety system rooted in compassion, humanity and love, and to deliver true justice,” she added. “I hope we fulfill it.”

Continuing Attacks On Police

Omar has spent the better part of a year denigrating police officers in Minnesota.

“I will never cosign on funding a police department that continues to brutalize us,” she said to a cheering mob in June. “And I will never stop saying not only do we need to disinvest in police, but we need to completely dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department.”

Not long after, the city council followed Omar’s lead, taking numerous steps to disrupt the department.

One such disruption was an $8 million cut from the mayor’s proposed police budget. Those funds would instead be diverted to mental health and violence prevention units in the department.

Officers, from Omar’s own lips, were accused of brutalizing harmless innocents while the department was called a ‘cancer’ that needed to be cut out.

Former White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany has warned against Omar’s rhetoric in the past.

“When you have people out there, like Representative Ilhan Omar, saying, ‘We have to completely dismantle the police’ and ‘police are cancer,’” she lamented, “this is not how we should be talking about our heroes.”

It’s quite clear that Rep. Ilhan Omar does not support police in Minnesota.

Time and again, she’s handcuffed them with her rhetoric and subsequent actions taken by the council.

And now she has the nerve to blame them for the rise in crime.

How is that for liberal logic?
