Democrat Omar Wants Homeland Security Defunded, Says Trump’s ‘Hateful Wall’ Should Not Be Built

Radical lawmaker from Minnesota has a few new outrageous ideas to share with Americans

By PoliZette Staff | February 9, 2019

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) — elected during the November 2018 midterms — now has taken aim at the Department of Homeland Security.

The newly minted lawmaker referred to President Donald Trump in a tweet on Friday night as “Individual 1.”

She then declared that the commander-in-chief does not have “public support” to “ram his hateful wall through Congress.”

“Let’s stand firm: #Not1Dollar to DHS,” Omar urged her fellow Democrats in the tweet.

“While there have been growing calls from Democrats to abolish ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), there hasn’t been a strong demand to defund the entire Department of Homeland Security, which also includes the Transportation Safety Administration, Secret Service, Coast Guard and Federal Emergency Management Agency,” as Fox News noted in a piece about Omar’s comments.

Never mind that President Trump’s approval rating jumped to 50 percent following his State of the Union speech this past Tuesday night.

She’s ignored that totally.

Here’s what’s also particularly interesting.

Shortly before calling for the defunding of Homeland Security, Omar “tweeted her outrage on behalf of TSA workers in Minnesota who haven’t received back pay due to the recent partial government shutdown,” as Fox News anchor Rob Schmitt pointed out in a tweet.

“Ilhan Omar angry and complaining TSA agents haven’t received back pay,” Schmitt wrote, “then an hour later calls to defund DHS … which would end TSA.”

Since her election in November, Omar — the first Somali-American elected to Congress and one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress — has also accused President Trump of wanting a “coup” against Venezuela.

Here was her tweet on that from a few weeks ago:

She also recently made these remarks to Democracy Now after the State of the Union: “The president …  also seems to be divorced from reality when we’re talking about the situation that’s unfolding in Venezuela. You know, we understand that there is a crisis, and we believe in furthering democracy, but it is really important that we caution ourselves from getting involved and further — furthering suffering in countries like Venezuela. When he talks about the humanitarian crisis, when he talks about the need for the people of Venezuela to have self-determination, you know, I think back to what’s happening in [the] Saudi Arabia-led war in Yemen, that the United States is assisting, that is the worst humanitarian crisis. Over 800,000 people have faced starvation. And so, when we see this president make remarks, it really becomes easily visible to see how divorced he truly is from reality.”

She added, “I remember that most of us were laughing when he made the comment around socialism [in his SOTU on Tuesday night]. What we advocate for — what Bernie [Sanders of Vermont], myself, you know, Alexandria [Ocasio-Cortez of New York], Rashida [Tlaib of Michigan], what we advocate for — is an America that is prosperous, an America that makes sure that everybody has access to jobs, everybody has access to housing, everybody has access to health care, that we don’t have an America where people are dying because they can’t afford insulin, that we don’t have an America where people are dying because they don’t have a home and they’re freezing outside, and an America where we deal with our homeless crises.”

“It’s going to be really important for the next year,” she went on, “for us to find someone who can lead our nation into prosperity and who is not going to be a liar-in-chief in the White House.”

Omar also recently declared — with no proof whatsoever — that Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) has been “compromised.”

During a recent interview on CNN’s “Newsroom,” anchors Poppy Harlow and Jim Sciutto cornered Omar about her unsubstantiated claims against Trump and Graham.

“We need to ask you about this,” Sciutto began as he pointed to Omar’s tweet. “This has sparked a fair amount of criticism, not just from Republicans. Can you explain that comment?”

Omar replied that “we have seen many times” over the past three years that Graham “has told us how dangerous this president could be if he was given the opportunity to be in the White House.”

“And all of a sudden, he has made not only a 180 turnaround, but a 360 turnaround. And so I am pretty sure that there is something happening with him, whether it is, you know, something that has to do with his funding when it comes to running for office, whether it has something to do with the polling that they might have in — in his district, or whether it has to do with some sort of leadership within the Senate,” Omar surmised.

“He is somehow compromised to no longer stand up for the truth and — and to make sure that he is fighting to protect the oath that he took in serving the American people,” Omar also claimed.

The newly minted lawmaker has also posted several tweets attacking Israel, as Fox News noted — in one, she threw in with a liberal activist and declared that “current-day Israel is similar to the U.S. South during the era of racial segregation.”
