Trump Names Former Fox News Anchor Heather Nauert to Replace Haley as UN Ambassador

President Trump is expected to name Heather Nauert, a former anchor and correspondent with Fox News, to replace Nikki Haley as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.

Bloomberg reports that some of Nauert’s assets include strong communication skills – some had speculated she could fill the role of communications director – and “a fluency with the Trump White House.”

Nauert will replace Haley, who had a widely acknowledged successful tenure at the U.N. Haley submitted her resignation in early October, prompting speculation of her future, including on these pages as a possible replacement for Vice President Mike Pence.

Bloomberg notes that Nauert had little experience in either government or foreign policy prior to joining the administration as State Department spokeswoman “after several years as an anchor and correspondent for Fox News, including on the Fox and Friends show watched by Trump.”

She has virtually no experience as a diplomat but her skills in relaying messages through the medium of television and internet were highly sought after by the White House.

Nauert has a huge mountain to climb

Haley, her predecessor, was viewed by those on both sides of the aisle as having a successful tenure in the post. By contrast, Nauert tends to be more loyal to the Trump administration which would make her a target for attacks from Democrats during the confirmation process.

Not to mention her history with Fox will likely cause Senate Democrats to look for any detail to exploit against her and pander to their base.

Senator Chris Murphy claims she is clearly not qualified for the role and mocked her role at Fox News.

Still, some are speculating her inexperience is causing resistance from both sides of the political sphere.

Her qualifications

Nauert has a strong rapport with Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, who supported her candidacy for the role. He “came to trust her as a reliable voice and advocate for Trump’s agenda,” Bloomberg stated.

Her defense of Israel at the State Department may have been another consideration in her selection. At a press briefing in May, she declared the United States opposes actions by the International Criminal Court against Israel because “it doesn’t help the cause for peace.”

Nauert is a strong voice for President Trump’s “America First” foreign policy. Will that translate from the media to the hostile chambers of the anti-American U.N.?
