Robert Mueller’s special counsel has raged on since the firing of former FBI director James Comey, and it could be coming to a conclusion soon, after finding no connections between Donald Trump and the Russian government.
As that witch hunt wraps up, the House of Representatives is set to demand that the Justice Department launch a second special counsel investigation, this one aimed at finding wrongdoing in their own Department, and in the FBI, when it came to spying on the Trump campaign.
As the Daily Mail reported:
Three members of the House Freedom Caucus will introduce a 12-page resolution on Tuesday calling for a new probe to run in parallel with one led by Robert Mueller,
They also want an accounting of how the FBI ended its investigation into then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s personal email server, a home-brew device that held classified documents but was unsecured.Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said Monday that he will press the DOJ’s inspector general to look into claims that the FBI, then led by James Comey, deployed Bureau resources to spy on the Trump campaign in 2016.
But a special counsel would have greater power to hold the DOJ to account by subpoenaing witnesses and documents, and could file criminal charges against anyone accused of wrongdoing.
These calls for a second special counsel are in direct response to the new revelation that the FBI had at least one “inside source” within the Trump campaign – a man named Stefan Halper. Halper is a Cambridge professor with intelligence ties who approached Trump campaign advisers Carter Page, George Papadopoulos and Sam Clovis on multiple occasions. President Trump’s top trade adviser, Peter Navarro, recommended appointing Stefan Halper to a senior role in the Trump administration after Halper pitched himself for an ambassadorship in Asia.
It didn’t take a second special counsel to uncover the reality that the FBI tried to plant an informant within Trump’s cabinet – so who knows what a counsel would turn up with their vast resources. One thing is for certain; it’ll be damning for Obama’s DOJ and FBI.
