GOP Rep. Cawthorn Taunts Pro-Gun Control Democrats: ‘Come And Take Them’

Freshman Republican Congressman Madison Cawthorn took to the House floor during a debate over gun control bills on Wednesday to call out his Democrat colleagues and to issue a warning.

In his floor speech, Cawthorn said, “I want to remind my colleagues of a simple fact that is far too often swept under the rug by the left: Americans have a right to obtain firearms for lawful purposes.”

“Let me be clear to everyone in this chamber, you will not take this right away from us. I know it’s easy to be sucked into the DC bubble, but outside of here, in real America, when we say ‘Come and Take It,’ we damn well mean it.”

He finished with a direct challenge to the Democrats: “If you think this bastardization of the Constitution will be met with silence you know nothing of the America I know. You want my guns, I know it, we all know it. Well Mr. Speaker, you can come and take them.”

The phrase “Come and Take Them,” or ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ in classical Greek, is a popular reference to King Leonidas of the iconic 300 Spartans. 

Cawthorn was joined in his sentiments by Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), who vowed that the government “will never know what guns I own.”

Democrats Attempt At Gun Control Begins

According to USA Today, two bills passed in the House on Thursday that tighten gun sales regulations. H.R. 8 expands background checks required for the sale or transfer of firearms. This includes private individuals and groups, and also online sales.

The bill is aimed at the so-called “gun show loophole.”

This bill, first introduced and passed in the House in 2019,  would also make illegal for anyone who is not a licensed firearm importer, manufacturer, or dealer to trade or sell firearms to another person. 

Anyone wishing to sell or trade firearms that is not licensed would have to go through a licensed dealer who would then do the required background checks.

The second bill, H.R. 1446, would extend the initial background check review period from three days to ten days.

Gun Control A Priority

Joe Biden has been a proponent of gun legislation prior to his run for the White House. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said that, 

“For years, this bipartisan House-passed background checks bill languished in the Senate under Republican Leader Mitch McConnell. Now, with Senate Democrats in the Majority, we have the opportunity to act on this overwhelmingly popular, lifesaving legislation to protect American communities.” 

Even though Schumer might think now is the time to act, because of the Senate filibuster, Democrats will have a tough time getting ten Republicans to break the 60-vote threshold.

It is also possible that, because no Republicans may sign on with the Democrats, they could use it as a maneuver to block gun control legislation.

If that should happen, Schumer went on to say that Democrats would “come together as a caucus and we’ll see how we’re going to get this done.” He hinted at possibly ending or halting the filibuster rule.

Psaki Hints At Possible Executive Orders

When it comes to pushing through gun legislation, everything is on the table for Democrats.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said Tuesday that President Biden would not rule out using executive order in order to enact gun control measures. When asked at a recent press briefing, Psaki said, “The President has a range of actions at his disposal.”

The vote for the first bill, H.R. 8 was 227-203 with eight Republicans backing it. The second vote on H.R. 1446 was 219-210 with two Republicans voting for it.

A statement from Rep. Jody Hice (R-GA) sums up what it is Republicans suspect is the Democrat agenda concerning the Second Amendment rights of all Americans.

“Come And Take Them”

The popular phrase used by supporters of the Second Amendment has an interesting history. 

According to Plutarch, Persia’s Xerxes demanded that the Spartans lay down their arms, on the eve of the Battle of Thermopylae.

King Leonidas, leader of the 300 Spartans of lore, responded: “Come and take them.”

In America, that phrase was famously used twice during turning points in our history. 

During the American Revolution, the British demanded the surrender of Fort Morris.

American Col. John McIntosh wrote back: “As to surrendering the fort, receive this laconic reply: COME AND TAKE IT!”

The phrase, and the popular Gonzales Flag, was also used in the Texas Revolution. The flag shows a cannon that was demanded to be turned over to Mexican soldiers, and the phrase “Come and Take It.” 

Needless to say, the cannon was not turned over.
