With less than three months until the upcoming midterm elections, Democrats can boast a new poll produced by Gallup showing that President Joe Biden’s current approval rating rose to 44 percent in August, indicating that despite a string of recent blows to his administration regarding high inflation, high gas prices, and other areas, he has been able to recover due to some key legislative victories.

The poll, which sampled 1,006 voting age adults between August 1st through the 23rd, came out on Thursday and shows that 44 percent of voting age adults currently approve of the Biden administration’s performance, which stands in stark contrast to his record low of 38 percent back in July.

While the current results show a large drop from the approval he had at the beginning of his term, which sat at 57 percent, Biden and Democrat supporters will still take this as a win since it is his highest point this year in terms of public opinion, and comes when the blue team needs it most.

Has Biden Blunted Republican’s ‘Red Wave’?

Despite major issues regarding Biden’s handling record high inflation and substantial increases in the cost of gas, electricity, and food, Democrats have been able to reinvigorate their base due to some key legislative victories as well as marketing campaigns targeting areas where Republicans took some losses.

In the past month alone, Democrats passed the so-called Inflation Reduction Act, a massive tax hike and spending bill for global warming and health care. Despite being much higher than they were a year ago, Biden will also take credit for the short term decrease in gas prices from their highest point just a few months ago.

Biden has also provided billions in weapons and other aid to Ukraine amidst the Russian invasion, and also took credit for the counterterrorism operation which killed al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri.

These are all factors that Republicans will have to contend with before the votes are cast in November. The GOP has largely dropped conversations keeping Democrats accountable for their actions regarding the lockdowns of 2020, support for the subsequent rioting by BLM and Antifa throughout the nation, as well as the widely criticized Covid vaccine mandates which forced many Americans out of jobs.

While the recent raid on former President Donald Trump’s home by the FBI in Mar-a-Lago will be a factor in driving out strident Trump supporters to the polls, Democrats will also be in force due to their outrage regarding the overturning of Roe v. Wade this summer.

While some conservative commentators are discussing the potential of a “red wave” this November, not everyone is entirely convinced of Republicans being guaranteed a massive victory.

“Republicans, you’re not going to have a massive win, stop deluding yourselves,” said conservative columnist Ann Coulter to The Political Insiders’s Brett Smith. She blamed Republican leaders for dropping issues regarding Cancel Culture, the immigration crisis on the border, and surging crime throughout the nation as the reason that they are not overwhelmingly leading Democrats in the polls.

Two Takes on Biden’s High Approval Rating

While polls only show a snapshot of a given moment in time, partisan pundits are providing two countering takes on how to view Biden’s recent surge in approval.

“The media and Democrats are wildly celebrating Joe Biden’s approval rating from Gallup rising to 44 percent,” tweeted The Daily Wire founder and conservative commentator Ben Shapiro. “Let it be noted that this is still a very bad approval rating; it is equivalent to Trump’s 44 percent in October 2018, after which Dems won 41 House seats.”

Biden-supporter Joe Scarborough, host of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” posted to Twitter that the approval rating surge is the product of what progressives would consider unpopular actions by the GOP.

“More fallout from GOP extremist stances on abortion, guns, and election conspiracy theories,” said Scarborough. “Republicans should be up 20 points by now. Trumpism is dragging them down, just like it did in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 elections.”

GOP in Panic

Former President Trump and potential 2024 Republican presidential contender, Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida, have been traveling the country to support MAGA oriented candidates in GOP primaries, most notably removing anti-Trump Republicans such as Congresswoman Liz Cheney who recently lost her party’s primary in Wyoming.

Despite activist conservatives making inner party strides, the general election is still not looking like a sure thing.

Key senate races Republicans need victories on are not looking great. Incumbent Ron Johnson in Wisconsin is currently trailing his Democratic opponent as is Dr. Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania, and it’s a similar story in Nevada, Georgia, and Arizona.
