Goodbye: Anti-Trump Rep. Adam Kinzinger Won’t Seek Reelection

Representative Adam Kinzinger, the man who became a media darling through his anti-Trump diatribes, has announced he will not seek reelection.

The news comes just weeks after Democrats in Illinois unveiled a new congressional map that significantly impacted Kinzinger’s chances of winning in 2022.

“I also remember during that campaign saying that if I ever thought it was time to move on from Congress, I would, and that time is now,” he said in a video posted Friday morning.

Kinzinger is one of 10 Republicans who joined Democrats in impeaching former President Donald Trump and has played a prominent role on the House select committee investigating the Capitol riot.

Kinzinger Won’t Seek Reelection

Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) explained that he can’t focus on reelection to Congress when he must partake in “a broader fight nationwide.”

And indeed, it sounds as if the ‘Never Trumper’ is setting his sites on a different, if not higher office.

“I want to make it clear. This isn’t the end of my political future, but the beginning,” he said. “Serving six terms in Congress has been an honor of a lifetime.”

Democrats in Illinois were poised to discard Kinzinger like a used toothpick as they schemed to draw a new congressional map that would gut his district.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that he would have had trouble winning regardless what had happened – and not just because of the Democrats.

“Kinzinger’s political problem is that he is a major target of the pro-Trump forces in the GOP and he would face a primary battle he may not survive no matter the district he picked to run in,” they wrote.

Kinzinger is quitting because he didn’t want to deal with the reality of how unpopular he is outside of corporate media greenrooms, his boss Pelosi’s office, and the generally deranged hellscape that is D.C. Which, you know, fine. Good for everyone.

Running For Higher Office

There shouldn’t be any tears shed – this time – for Kinzinger’s announcement that he won’t seek reelection. His comment regarding a broader “nationwide” fight aligns with his views on his over-inflated self-worth.

It was just days ago that he compared Republicans who stand up to President Trump to the heroes of Flight 93 who fought back against terrorists on 9/11.

“People have to stand up and say this is wrong,” Kinzinger said regarding Trump and his aides’ efforts to fight the House committee. “We’ve got to – if you think about heroics on Flight 93 that saved the Capitol in 2001, it wasn’t Todd Beamer alone.”

“It was everybody standing up and saying we’ve had enough,” he continued. “We’re going to sacrifice ourselves to do this, and right now we need more Republicans to stand up, and lead your people. Lead your people. Tell them the truth.”

Through it all, the attention-loving congressman has refused to rule out running for higher office.

“I certainly wouldn’t rule out Senate or governor and anything else,” he said. “Maybe, who knows?”

A Politico column in August notes that those close to Kinzinger believe he may run for statewide office or “he could even mount a 2024 presidential bid.”

Democratic Rep. Mike Quigley wished his colleague well.

“I’m going to miss Mr. Kinzinger in Congress,” Quigley told CNN. “And I hope he continues in public life with the kinds of things he’s doing, addressing the concerns we had with the Trump administration.”
