FBI Says Dayton Gunman Explored ‘Violent Ideologies’

An FBI official said Tuesday investigators have evidence Dayton, Ohio, shooter Connor Betts explored “violent ideologies” prior to an attack that left nine dead Sunday morning, but there was no indication the shooting was racially motivated.

“We have uncovered evidence throughout the course of our investigation that the shooter was exploring violent ideologies,” Todd Wickerham, the FBI special agent in charge of the Cincinnati field office, said at a press conference.

Wickerham did not describe the ideologies in question, but Betts’ social media activities appear to show he described himself as a “leftist” and expressed support for Antifa, a left-wing activist group. Betts also appeared to have said on Twitter that he would vote for Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

WATCH:

Betts, 24, opened fire early Sunday morning in Dayton’s nightlife district, killing nine people, including his sister. Betts reportedly arrived in the area with his sister and a male friend and wore body armor during the attack.

Wickerham said at the press conference that investigators have not determined Betts’ motive or whether he was assisted in the attack.

Hours before the shooting, 21-year-old Patrick Crusius allegedly murdered 22 people in El Paso, Texas. Crusius is believed to have posted a manifesto shortly before the shooting in which he railed against a “Hispanic invasion” into the U.S.

Authorities arrested Crusius following the attack and he faces capital murder charges. The Justice Department designated the massacre an act of domestic terrorism and a potential hate crime that could lead to the death penalty.

The two shootings have sparked debate over gun control, as well as the role political motivations may have played in both massacres. Liberal journalistscriticized CNN and other news outlets for reporting on Betts’ social media history and his political ideology. Daily Beast editor Justin Miller said that “CNN recklessly speculates the Dayton shooter may have been politically motivated.”

Betts also had a history of misogyny and mental illness. In high school, he was expelled after compiling a list of female classmates he wanted to rape. One ex-girlfriend wrote in an online essay that Betts once showed her a video of a synagogue shooting.

  1. Almost? Or ALL! Think going back some 100 Years. The Presidents, That were MURDERED in office. All of the MASS shootings! All of the “Random” Shooting MURDERS, All have been a Social Communist MF Democrat’s!

  2. Sure, it’s “a big bad world”, but Betts thought of himself as a leftist. That would make his shooting spree counter productive to the “DemoCommunist ” agenda. Then again, the Democrats are blaming Trump for this terrorist act when it was one of their own followers. Democrats are the most pompous, uncaring and most untrustworthy people in the USA. I would not vote on that ticket if they promised me a million dollars in exchange. Screwball whack-a-doos for sure.

  3. Evidently you don’t know about the real world. I could tell you some stories about the ex and what he used to do for the U.S. government covertly. Yes, Virginia, there is a big bad world out there that is controlled by powerful people.

  4. Almost ALL MAS SHOOTINGS are by DEMOCRATS and these last two are no exception so instead of banning guns why don’t we BAN DEMOCRATS…. end of problem….

  5. “Just as likely, the shootings are orchestrated to further the DemoCommunist agenda.” Again, nonsense and dangerous language espoused. It’s a pretty cold and dangerous opinion you provide. Unless you are one who silently supports such rhetoric in the first place?

  6. “I believe that Dayton and El Paso murderers are inspired by dark ideologies of Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, AOC, Ilhan Omar etc. and taking direct instructions from them to create murder and mayhem.” Really, gonna keep up that rhetoric and nonsense! Dark ideologies are not what they are espousing. What you state is representative of those dark. Ideologies and irresponsible. Behaviour. Considering the El Paso murderers are seemingly associated with far right leanings and extreme associations. At least be a bit more responsible in making such comments. That sort of rhetoric only adds to a greater issue and makes it even harder to overcome or address. Otherwise, it only promotes fear, hate, and negative feelings instead of anything productive. You end up being a part of the problem, and not a solution.

  7. The El Paso shooter not only talked about a Hispanic invasion, he also talked about the environmental damage being done. We already know those whack jobs advocate for elimination or at least the severe curtailment of the human infestation “for the good of Gaia”. He also channeled Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders in his hatred for corporations and if memory serves me Wal Mart is the largest civilian employer in the US. In addition he also stated that his beliefs PREDATED President Trump running for office. He also stated that the President would be falsely blamed. Funny how most of the media fails to mention these things.

  8. I believe that Dayton and El Paso murderers are inspired by dark ideologies of Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, AOC, Ilhan Omar etc. and taking direct instructions from them to create murder and mayhem. Other enemy of American people are the MSM, who are constantly preaching anti-Trump violence.
