The End of the "Phoney War"

The events leading up to the Dunkirk evacuation marked the end of the so-called Phoney War, an eight-month period from October 1939 – April 1940 during which there were no major military land operations on the Western Front.

The Germans invaded France on May 10, 1940, and their armored units were so successful that the British, French, and Belgian troops had no choice but to retreat to the harbor of Dunkirk, which was the last remaining port available for major action.
