Republicans have traditionally been thought of as more hawkish and Democrats move dovish when it comes to foreign policy. But has President Donald Trump now changed all that?
When Trump announced a drawdown of troops from Syria and then later Afghanistan last month, most liberals attacked the President. But weren’t these the same leftists who once opposed the Iraq War and wanted to bring the troops home?
Why were they mad Trump would bring the troops home?
The Intercept’s Glenn Greenwald had a story recently that highlighted a new poll that shows Democrats are far more in favor of prolonging the wars in Syria and Afghanistan than Republicans.
“While official Washington united in opposition, new polling data from Morning Consult/Politico shows that a large plurality of Americans support Trump’s Syria withdrawal announcement: 49 percent support to 33 percent opposition,” Greenwald writes.
So most Americans support withdrawal. But that’s not the most interesting part.
“But what is remarkable about the new polling data on Syria is that the vast bulk of support for keeping troops there comes from Democratic Party voters, while Republicans and independents overwhelming favor their removal,” Greenwald writes. “The numbers are stark: Of people who voted for Clinton in 2016, only 26 percent support withdrawing troops from Syria, while 59 percent oppose it.”
“Trump voters overwhelmingly support withdraw by 76 percent to 14 percent,” he adds.
“A similar gap is seen among those who voted Democrat in the 2018 midterm elections (28 percent support withdrawal while 54 percent oppose it), as opposed to the widespread support for withdrawal among 2018 GOP voters: 74 percent to 18 percent,” Greenwald notes.

He also notes that this new Republican-Democrat divide on war is true of opinions on Afghanistan as well, with most Republicans supporting a withdrawal or drawdown of U.S. troops and most Democrats preferring they stay.
Remember, these are the same Democrats who once voted for Barack Obama to bring home troops and end the wars.
Is there no amount of hypocrisy that bothers liberals? The left marched in the streets fifteen years ago demanding that George W. Bush bring home troops, and now that a Republican president is actually doing it…they’re mad?
