Democrat Congressman Who Tried to Warn Colleagues About Defunding The Police, Carjacked At Gunpoint In DC

Representative Henry Cuellar (D-TX), who ran against a progressive primary challenger by calling out the 'defund the police' movement, was the victim of an armed carjacking in Washington, D.C. Monday night.

Representative Henry Cuellar (D-TX), who ran against a progressive primary challenger by calling out the “defund the police” movement, was the victim of an armed carjacking in Washington, D.C. on Monday night.

He becomes the second Democrat victim of a violent crime in the nation’s Capitol this year.

The incident took place outside an apartment building that houses dozens of members of Congress when they stay in D.C.

A statement issued by Cuellar’s chief of staff Jacob Hochberg indicates that there were three “armed assailants,” but he notes that the congressman is okay.

“As Congressman Cuellar was parking his car this evening, 3 armed assailants approached the Congressman and stole his vehicle,” Hochberg said.

“Luckily, he was not harmed and is working with local law enforcement,” he added. “Thank you to Metro PD and Capitol Police for their swift action and for recovering the Congressman’s vehicle.”

Cuellar, Who Called Out ‘Defund The Police’ Movement, Victim Of Carjacking

Cuellar, who has been one of the more moderate Democrats when it comes to crime and border policies, was actually accused of using GOP talking points when trying to fend off a primary challenge from an Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY)-backed opponent just last year.

One such message accused his opponent of wanting to “defund the police and border patrol which would wreck our local economy.”

That said, Congressman Cuellar was criticized a year earlier by the National Republican Congressional Committee for supporting a measure that would have defunded police departments.

“As crime continues to rise across the country, Texans won’t forget that Henry Cuellar voted to make it easier to defund the police departments that keep them safe,” NRCC Spokeswoman Torunn Sinclair said in a statement at the time.

DC Is A Lawless Liberal Cesspool

Cuellar’s carjacking comes after Washington, D.C.’s city council voted to slash millions from the police budget in the summer of 2020.

Democrats tried in March to revive a controversial crime bill that would have lessened penalties for a range of crimes.

This comes as total crime is up 22% in D.C. so far this year – including a 14% increase in homicides, a 111% increase in sex crimes, a 400% increase in arson, and a 104% increase in motor vehicle theft.

Earlier this year, Minnesota Representative Angie Craig (D) was attacked in an elevator at her apartment building in Washington, D.C. before fighting off her attacker by throwing hot coffee at him.

An affidavit indicated Craig’s assailant punched her in the face and grabbed her around her collarbone area.

Axios is reporting that other members of Congress were left “shocked” over the news of the carjacking “because of how many lawmakers live in the building and its Capitol Police presence.”

Cuellar’s stolen vehicle has since been recovered, presumably by the police.
