Unfortunate news this morning as we’re just learning that Representative Louise Slaughter has passed away. A pioneer for women’s rights and success, the congresswoman was 88.
The news comes exclusively from the Democrat and Chronicle. From the report:
Democratic Congresswoman Lousie Slaughter, who had represented the Rochester area in Congress since 1987, has died. She was 88.
Three sources confirmed the death to the Democrat and Chronicle Friday morning. Her office later released a statement confirming her passing.
Her office revealed earlier this week that she had suffered a head injury after a fall, and had been hospitalized with a concussion.
Slaughter was the oldest member of the House of Representatives.

Slaughter’s chief of staff said the following in a moving statement:
“To have met Louise Slaughter is to have known a force of nature. She was a relentless advocate for Western New York whose visionary leadership brought infrastructure upgrades, technology and research investments, and two federal manufacturing institutes to Rochester that will transform the local economy for generations to come.”

Oh my goodness. This is stunning news. Louise Slaughter was one of the sharpest, funniest and nicest women in Congress. Ranking member of the House Rules Committee. Lot of people will be upset over this. https://t.co/BzJLdRkZjq

Slaughter was a member of the House for 30 years. Former chair of the Rules Committee. Slaughter was the oldest member of the House, but was very sharp. Sad news.

I first met @louiseslaughter at a White House dinner in 1998. She was my seatmate at President Clinton’s table and we had a ball talking like old friends. Without question, she helped make that an unforgettable night. RIP, dear one.
