If Democrats aren’t careful, they won’t have any candidates to run in red states that Trump won in the fall.

During last week’s hectic news cycle, where pictures both doctored and real of child immigrants being interned in containment were lighting up the airwaves, a prominent Senate Democrat nearly died. And we’re just learning the details now.

Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri nearly choked to death during a Democrat luncheon last Thursday. She was thankfully saved by West Virginia Democrat Senator Joe Manchin.

From the Associated Press:

U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin has cracked a rib of U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill while performing the Heimlich maneuver on the fellow Democrat when she began choking.

A spokesman for Manchin tells the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that McCaskill began choking during a luncheon for Senate Democrats on Thursday. Manchin used the Heimlich maneuver to dislodge the blockage in McCaskill’s throat, but he cracked a rib in the process.

Here is a Fox News segment on the whole affair:

Thank goodness Sen. Manchin was there to offer his assistance. It’s not a stretch to say his quick reaction may have saved her life.

There’s a curious lesson from all of this. In an age where privacy doesn’t seem to exist thanks to the internet and constant social media-driven communication, this incident was kept under wraps. And that’s a good thing for Sen. McCaskill’s privacy! We’re so used to hearing about all the finest details about our political figures. It comes as a surprise when a medical issue arises with no forewarning.

We got the same kind of surprise back when it was announced that First Lady Melania Trump was admitted into the hospital for a pre-planned kidney surgery. (RELATED: Melania Trump Has Kidney Surgery at Walter Reed Medical Center). The public got no heads up about it, and the media was either kept largely in the dark or were considerate enough to leave it as a private matter.

If only that kind of standard could prevail more often.

Sen. McCaskill will reportedly keep campaigning despite the broken rib. She’s running in a deep-red state and has made many overtures to President Trump in an effort to win re-election by pleasing her constituents, including voting for many of the President’s Cabinet nominees.

We’re happy that Sen. McCaskill lived through the event!
