Ai Weiwei, an artist and Chinese dissident now living in the West, believes Americans are already living in an authoritarian state even if they don’t know it yet.
Weiwei made the comments in an interview with PBS reporter Margaret Hoover in which he discussed his latest book.
Hoover noted that Weiwei loosely connected tweets by former President Donald Trump to directives from Mao Zedong during the Cultural Revolution.
“Do you see Donald Trump as an authoritarian?” she asked, only to get a response she likely didn’t expect.
Weiwei said he didn’t see Trump as an authoritarian because, “If you are authoritarian, you have to have a system supporting you.”
“You cannot just be an authoritarian by yourself.”
And while Trump never had a support system for anything he attempted to do in the White House, President Biden certainly does across multiple institutions – Democrat control of both Houses, federal law enforcement officials, and the media.
The Chinese dissident admits there are already signs of authoritarianism taking over America.
“But certainly, in the United States, with today’s condition, you can easily have an authoritarian,” he argued. “In many ways, you’re already in [an] authoritarian state. You just don’t know it.”
Chilling words from a man who lived in exile in a void of democracy and human rights like China.
When pressed for further insight, Weiwei’s responses veered onto a path in which he described efforts to enforce “political correctness” as “dangerous.”
“Many things happening today in the U.S. can be compared to the Cultural Revolution in China,” he said, pointing to “people trying to be unified in a certain political correctness.”
“That is very dangerous,” he added.
There are other examples amplified by the current regime in America, of course.
A President implementing a legal “workaround” to force unwilling citizens to get a vaccine they may feel is unnecessary and then telling people to ignore a court that says it raises “grave statutory and constitutional issues” is one such example.
Creating a state-run propaganda machine where the President refuses to speak with certain media outlets and reporters and aides behind the scenes pull his strings to create a particular message, would be another.
Controlling the flow of information by actively working with social media outlets to flag ‘disinformation’ and control what Americans can see and share – another.
Journalist Glenn Greenwald has described the “union of corporate and state power” as “one of the classic hallmarks of fascism.”
Weiwei has frequently called out China’s authoritarian policies. Now he’s warning America that it could be coming here too.

Now is the time to support and share the sources you trust.
