Black Lives Matter Co-Founder Patrisse Cullors To Resign Amid Exposés About Her Finances

Patrisse Cullors, the executive director for the Black Lives Matter Foundation and a co-founder of the organization, will be resigning her position. Her resignation comes amidst a host of questions surrounding not just Cullors’ personal finances, but the also the finances of the foundation as well.

Cullors however, says that the plan to resign has been in the works for at least a year.

She also says that she is leaving the post to concentrate on other things, such as the release of a second book and a television deal involving Warner Bros.

Cullors Resigns Amid Controversy

Patrice Cullors says that “the time is right” to leave the Foundation, “I’ve created the infrastructure and the support, and the necessary bones and foundation, so that I can leave.”

Back in February, the Black Lives Matter Foundation declared that they had taken in over $90 million in donations in 2020 following the death of George Floyd. 

The Black Lives Matter Foundation said it ended 2020 with a balance of roughly $60 million. The math says they spent about one third of their money on operating expenses, grants, and donating to other charities.

In April, the New York Post reported that Cullors spent approximately $3.2 million on on four luxury homes in the past few years – though fact-checkers claim there is no evidence to suggest any of the money came from the foundation.

Where Is All The Money Going?

The revelation of the millions of dollars in donations received by the BLM Foundation has some asking what the money is being used for.

In March of this year, Michael Brown Sr., whose son’s death involving a white police officer in Ferguson Missouri led to nationwide protest, also wanted to know where and who the money was going to, and why his family’s foundation had not received any assistance.

“Where is all that money going? Who are they giving it to and what are they doing with it? Why hasn’t my family’s foundation received any assistance from the movement? How could you leave the families who are helping the community without any funding?”

Brown Sr.’s statement was a joint one with Tory Russell, director of the International Black Freedom Alliance.

Russell also released a statement, “We’re asking that Black Lives Matter leadership funds $20 million for Ferguson organizers, organizations and community foundations to do the work.” He added, “We’re not begging for a handout, we’re coming for what we deserve.”

Brionna Taylor’s mother also strongly criticized the Louisville Kentucky chapter of Black Lives Matter. 

She posted on Facebook shortly after the report of Cullors’ real estate purchases. “I’ve watched ya’ll raise money on behalf of Breonna’s family who has never done a damn thing for us … talk about fraud. I could walk into a room full of people who claim to be here for Breonna’s family who don’t even know who I am … I’m so sick of some of y’all … I’m done with this s##t enough is enough.”
