Bipartisan Effort In Michigan Pushing For National Popular Vote To Replace Electoral College

Leaders from both parties in Michigan are preparing to gather signatures in support of circumventing the Electoral College in presidential elections and join an interstate pact awarding votes to the winner of the popular vote.

Former Chairmen of the Democrat and Republican parties in Michigan are preparing to gather signatures in support of circumventing the Electoral College in presidential elections and join an interstate pact awarding votes to the winner of the popular vote.

The Detroit Free Press is lauding the effort as bipartisan, led by former Democrat Chair Mark Brewer and former Republican Chair Saul Anuzis.

A “Yes on National Popular Vote” petition has been granted approval by the Board of State Canvassers.

Supporters will need to gather 340,047 signatures in order to advance the proposal.

Liberals Want Electoral College Ditched In Favor Of Popular Vote

Thus far, 15 other states along with Washington, D.C. have enacted legislation to join the compact, accounting for 195 of 538 of the Electoral College votes. Michigan would make it 210 votes.

Every single one of these 16 states voted for Biden in the 2020 presidential election. Perhaps more importantly, every one of these states voted for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election as well, the last time the winner of the popular vote did not win the Electoral College.

There is a partisan political reason for supporting the popular vote, namely that it would allow states like California and New York to control the entire country by having greater weight in selecting the President.

New York is a microcosm of this – former Governor Andrew Cuomo won election every cycle because he captured areas such as Long Island, New York City, and areas in Buffalo, while the majority of the state overwhelmingly rejected him. These areas control what happens in the entire state, much to the detriment of upstate New York.

Abolishing the Electoral College would amplify that process nationwide and is a position taken by extremists who dare to claim the wisdom behind their efforts far exceeds that of the Founding Fathers.

This effort stems from two things – bitterness and ignorance.

It generates almost exclusively from the left’s unwillingness to accept the results of the 2016 election – if not the 2000 election – as well as the desire to upend the Electoral College being put in place to prevent large pockets of the population from deciding elections for the entire country.

Always Looking To Change The Rules

As integral as the 2016 election is in driving liberals mad over the Electoral College, it’s also rather amusing that part of the failure of the Clinton campaign that year involved a push to garner more of the popular vote instead of actually trying to win the election.

Former President Donald Trump physically campaigned in key battleground states while Clinton’s advisers dumped millions of dollars into Democrat strongholds in an attempt to run up the popular vote tally.

Seriously, that’s what they did.

Since that time, liberals in the media have been advocating hard for a rule change.

CNN anchor Don Lemon suggested America needs to blow up the entire system.

“We’re going to have to blow up the entire system,” Lemon charged, something even colleague Chris Cuomo refused to concede.

Joy Behar, co-host of The View, suggested the Electoral College needed to be changed prior to the 2020 election because she feared a Trump victory.

“I think it’s ridiculous that a few states, a handful of states, determine my future. It’s ridiculous, so why bother voting in the rest of the country?” she whined. “They need to change the Electoral College as soon as possible.”

Of course, with a national popular vote, just a handful of counties will determine our future.

Former White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany has argued that Democrats like to change the rules when they lose while Republicans protect the system regardless.

“We fight to protect the Constitution when Democrats say outright we are going to blow up the entire system because we do not get our way,” she said.
