Biden Asks Congress For $33 Billion More In Ukraine Aid While Americans Struggle

As Americans struggle with soaring gas and food prices, and general inflation rates not seen in 40 years, on Thursday, President Joe Biden made a request to Congress for another $33 billion in funding for Ukraine.

The price tag is a huge jump from the several smaller $700 million and $500 million aid packages sent in recent weeks.

Taxpayer Money For Foreign Wars

Joe Biden said of the massive spending package:

“It’s not cheap. But caving to aggression is going to be more costly if we allow it to happen. We either back the Ukrainian people as they defend their country, or we stand by as the Russians continue their atrocities and aggression in Ukraine every day.”

The largest chunk of the money is to go towards a laundry list of equipment, such as artillery, armored vehicles, anti-armor and air capacity, land mines, and other military functions.

What About America?!

While Joe Biden’s horrific economic policies have helped put the American economy in its present state, $8.5 billion of that $33 billion is going to… support the Ukrainian economy.

That will not only fund the Ukrainian government, but also food, energy, and health care, and of course combating Russian disinformation and propaganda.

Meanwhile, here in America, gas prices hit an all time high of $4.17 per gallon. A March report from the USDA says that food prices have risen 9% in the last year. The USDA Economic Research Service predicts that prices will go up 4.5% – 5% in 2022. 

CNBC reported in February that health care costs have risen in the U.S. more than anywhere else. The United States is responsible for 40% of all global health spending.

Ongoing U.S. Spending In Ukraine

U.S. financial support of Ukraine did not just start when Russia invaded. Since 2014, the U.S. has been sending Ukraine at least $300 million per year, skyrocketing past $500 million per year during the Trump administration. 

Last year, U.S. aid for Ukrainian military funding alone came to more than $600 million. In just the last nine months however, U.S. aid to Ukraine will top $36 billion if this latest package goes through.

Both parties are responsible.

However, the GOP sang a very different tune when, in 2019, former President Donald Trump asked Congress for just $5 billion to construct the border wall on the U.S. southern border. Republicans were more willing to hold out with Democrats and ended up creating the longest government shutdown in American history than grant President Trump’s request. 

And that same U.S. southern border, which set a record high of 1.7 million border encounters in 2021, is again expected to set a record of 2.1 million according to Princeton Policy Advisors.
