Major Liberals Films Flop at Box Office in 2017

If we’re living in the age of the “resistance” against President Donald Trump, it isn’t showing up at the box office. At least it didn’t in 2017.

A number of films were released last year with leftist politics, and the only thing they all had in common besides their political tilt was that they all flopped “big league.” Among them were “Blade Runner 2049,” “Geostorm,” “Downsizing,” “Mother!,” and Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power.” As you may have gleaned from some of the titles, climate change was their go-to issue – one that polls particularly poorly as an issie that the American public cares about (and thus making is questionable why you’d build a movie around that).

According to the Washington Times,

Al Gore’s sequel snared a fraction of the first film’s tally: $3 million versus $24 million. That’s despite massive media attention, mostly fawning reviews and promotion from eco-conscious stars such as Paul McCartney, Bono and Pharrell Williams.

Documentaries rarely make serious coin at the box office, but the drop was massive.  “Geostorm” promised B-movie thrills with a tale of the Earth’s weather run amok. Audiences typically adore disaster films — the cheesier, the better. So what happened? The movie raked in $33 million from a reported $120 million budget.

“Downsizing,” a rare flop from director Alexander Payne (“About Schmidt”), envisioned a future in which people can shrink themselves to the height of a grapefruit. That fueled some cheeky social commentary and a recurring message about the world’s dwindling resources. “Mother!” and “Blade Runner 2049” touched on climate change in more subtle ways.

To be fair, box office revenue did suffer its worst-attended summer movie season in 25 years, so part of the blame can be attributed to that. Still, that’s only a problem because the entertainment industry as a whole couldn’t conjour up anything worthwhile to watch in summer 2017, and those inserting a political agenda were part of the reason why.
