After Ordering Indoor Mask Mandate, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser Went Unmasked At Wedding: Report

After Bringing Back Indoor Mask Mandate, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser Reportedly Went Unmasked At Wedding

On Saturday night, Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser officiated a wedding where “hundreds” of unmasked guests reportedly attended.

This happened after she reimposed an indoor mask mandate on her city, according to the Washington Examiner.

Bowser Sans Mask

“Fewer than 24 hours after Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser celebrated her 49th birthday with a DJ and comedian Dave Chappelle, she officiated a wedding at The Line DC, a four-star hotel in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of the city,” the Examiner reported.

The new outlet continued, “Despite the mayor’s order, the wedding reception featured hundreds of unmasked guests served by dozens of wait staff, including a conspicuously unmasked Bowser.”

The Examiner added, “Bowser, who was not sitting at the table designated for her during wedding toasts, did not wear a mask despite not actively eating or drinking.”

“When approached by the Washington Examiner to explain why she was maskless at an event now legally obligated to enforce mask compliance, security blockaded the free press,” the outlet noted.

Bowser then later denied that she broke her own rules.

The mask mandate mayor claimed she was eating and drinking inside when maskless, the exception to the rule.

“The mask mandate is for indoor settings (excluding while eating and drinking) and does not apply to outdoor settings,” her office said. “The Mayor wore a mask indoors in compliance with the mandate.”

Bowser Announced DC’s Mask Mandate On Friday

Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said fully vaccinated individuals should wear face masks in areas of the country where COVID-19 transmission was high.

This was a reversal from their position in May, when the CDC said that masks were no longer necessary in most settings for fully vaccinated people.

On Friday, Mayor Bowser announced that DC would be reimposing an indoor mask mandate beginning on Saturday, noting the uptick in cases in the District.

According to the New York Times, over the past week Washington, DC has reported an average of 57 new COVID-19 cases each day.

At the end of June, DC was reporting an average of 9 new cases a week, according to the Times’ data.

“We want to get ahead of it and nip it in the bud,” Bowser said at a press conference on Friday. “We know that masks can be very effective in doing that.”
