After Black Republican Tim Scott Rebutted Biden Speech, Leftists Trend Racial Slur On Twitter

Left-wing Twitter users got a racial slur to trend on the platform when Sen. Tim Scott, a black Republican (R-SC) delivered the Republican response to President Joe Biden’s first address to a joint session of Congress Wednesday night.

Scott touched on the subject of race, and appealed to his countrymen that “America is not a racist country.” During his speech, the slur “Uncle Tim” began to trend on Twitter – a reference to Uncle Tom.

Newsweek reports that the Uncle Tom slur is “used against Blacks who are viewed as too deferential to whites.”

While Scott stated in his speech that America is not a racist country, he did acknowledge that he has personally experienced racism.

Ironically, Scott said that some of that racism had come from the left in the form of being called the n-word and “Uncle Tom.”

Both Newsweek and Yahoo report that Twitter stepped in early Thursday morning to block “Uncle Tim” from trending.

Tim Scott’s Own History

Scott has never shied away from offering himself up as an example of how America has moved on from the dark days of segregation and Jim Crow.

He told the story of himself, his mother, and brother sharing one bedroom after his parents’ divorce, and moving in with his grandparents.

He talked about while growing up, seeing his grandfather “read” the newspaper, only to find out later that he had never learned to read, but wanted to set a good example.

He spoke of his own encounters with racism. “I have experienced the pain of discrimination. I know what it feels like to be pulled over for no reason. To be followed around a store while I’m shopping.” 

Scott has told the story several times of how he was stopped by a Capitol Hill police officer who did not recognize him, even though he was clearly wearing a pin that identified him as a U.S. Senator.

“The officer looked at me, a little attitude, and said, ‘The pin I know — you I don’t. Show me your ID. Later that evening I received a phone call from his supervisor apologizing.”

Democrats Want The Issue Not The Solution

During his speech, Scott referred to President Biden’s urging of Congress to reach some sort of agreement on police reform. However, it was Scott who, in 2015 after the shooting of Walter Scott, introduced a bill for funding of body cameras. 

Scott also stated that, “Last year, after the deaths of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, I wrote an even bigger police reform proposal. But my Democrat colleagues blocked it. I extended an olive branch; I offered amendments, but Democrats used the filibuster to block the debate from even happening.”

Ironically, this is the same filibuster that Democrats now say is racist, and that former President Barack Obama referred to as “a Jim Crow relic.”

Scott then called out his fellow Democrat Senators by saying, “My friends across the aisle seem to want the issue, more than they wanted a solution.” Scott said that he would continue to work on police reform solutions. “I’m hopeful that this will be different”, he said.

Conservatives Come To Tim Scott’s Defense

Reaction from conservatives to Twitter’s apparent approval of racist attacks from the left on Senator Scott was quick.

Mollie Hemingway, Senior Editor of The Federalist, said,  “Apparently they want him to suffer for the crime of upstaging Biden via a highly effective speech.”

Former congressional candidate Kimberly Klacik tweeted, “There sure are a lot of white people on this app comfortably hurling racial slurs at Senator Tim Scott. It’s almost like they’ve said them…”

National Review Editor Rich Lowry summed up the situation best:
