Former FBI Director James Comey Gets $10 Million Book Deal

Like many in public service before him, the big payday didn’t come until he was out of office.

Former FBI director James Comey heard the words “you’re fired” from President Donald Trump back in May. Not long after his congressional testimony in early June, he was spotted entering the building of the New York Times. There was, of course, speculation as to why he would be meeting with the Times.

Did he have some dirt on Trump he was dishing out? If he did, we haven’t seen it yet. One source claimed he was attending a charity event in the Times’ building.

Regardless of what he was there for, Comey has been meeting with other publications lately. And it turns out he’s shopping around a book that’ll net him a cool $10 million in advance.

Comey met with New York editors and publishers this week, and is being represented by the literary agency Javelin.

“It’s a book about leadership and his search for truth, informed by lessons and experiences he’s had throughout his career, including his recent experiences in the Trump administration,” Javelin partner Matt Latimer told the Times.

“It will speak to a broader desire in our country for more ethical leadership.”

Comey had initially been reluctant to take up offers by agents and publishers, but eventually changed his mind, the Times reported. His agent said he will use the book to impart lessons on ethics, decision-making, and leadership.

Comey’s book will likely be widely anticipated, and some have previously speculated he could receive as much as an eight-figure advance. The book will also undergo legal and governmental vetting to avoid disclosing classified information.

While most articles about the forthcoming book have stated that it’ll focus on Comey’s time in the FBI, it’s the few months he spent in the Trump Administration that readers will be purchasing the book for. Comey knows this perfectly well. My bet is that he will use the intrigue of possible revelations to boost sales.

That may not work out, however. If liberal readers are hoping for some explosive information, they likely won’t find any in Comey’s book. If Comey had any damning information, he would have shared it with Congress during his testimony. Instead, he gave the Democrats nothing to hang Trump on.
