Suppose you believe climate change activists, left-wing politicians, and any hysterical Gen Z TikToker.

In that case, you’d think the world was minutes away from being destroyed from any number of man-made evils. That’s right, my love of a good cheeseburger, desire to keep my family warm in the winter and cool in the summer, and economic status that requires me to transport myself and my family via gas-powered vehicle will spell the end of humanity.

It reminds me of when my generation used to scream about the evils of hairspray that was drilling a hole in the ozone layer. Whatever happened to that hole, anyway?

Oh, that’s right, thanks to industry and innovation, the ozone hole has shrunk over time. Thank goodness, because it takes a fair amount of hairspray to keep my mohawk tall and proud each day.

But perhaps no one has done more to recruit naïve suckers into the cult of climate change than Greta Thunberg.

Her latest stunt was to get “arrested” for the cameras, but people are calling BS on what allegedly happened.

Welcome To The Show!

Yesterday Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg was ‘arrested’ by German police while protesting the expansion of a coal mine. It all seemed so powerful to see this young woman with her typical defiant facial expression hauled away by German police in her black puffer jacket.

What an image to sell to the world’s youth, how cool and hip Greta is, all while still doing her part to save us all from our capitalist sins. But, unfortunately, a clip that has gone viral on Twitter shows her laughing with police as they pose for photos with reporters at the site.

Some on the right dared to claim that this clear staging of her arrest illustrates how individuals like Greta aren’t in the least bit interested in saving the world but more dedicated to elevating her brand.

For example, Charlie Kirk of Turning Point USA said:

“So it turns out Greta Thunberg’s arrest was as fake as the climate change cult she works for.”

Still, others recognized her performance as a nod to another popular Gen Z personality.

Conservative commentator Tim Young explains:

“AOC was way better at getting fake arrested than Greta Thunberg.”

This is in reference to when Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was removed from a Supreme Court sit-in protest over Roe v. Wade, where she cleverly placed her hands behind her back to simulate her arrest—proving that most of the protests and activism in our country and now in Europe is all just simulated theater.

While horrific for Ukrainians, the war in Ukraine has also taken a sizeable toll economically on the rest of the world. Notably, the war has caused energy insecurity in Europe, hence the government’s agreement to expand the coal mine that Greta and her brave, well-dressed few were protesting.

Commentator Ian Miles Cheong boils down the flaw in her protest:

“Greta Thunberg is in Germany protesting a coal mine because she thinks it’s better for elderly Germans to freeze in winter than it is for Germany to develop any sort of coherent energy strategy.”

But balancing cost and benefit isn’t a climate activist’s strong suit. And while many criticized Greta’s acting…er, I mean protesting…others celebrated it, such as NASA climate scientist Peter Kalmus:

“Greta’s first arrest. It’s time for many more of us to stand up and risk arrest for the sake of a livable planet. It will turn the tide.”

My, how they grow so fast. Unfortunately for Pete, this wasn’t actually Greta’s first arrest; she had been detained at the exact location a few days prior, she just didn’t have her press set up in advance.

***UPDATE***

After the above video went viral, German police predictably denied that the event was staged. The BBC writes: “A viral post falsely claimed the climate activist being held by police was “all set up for the cameras”.”

“We would never give ourselves to make such recordings,” a spokesperson for local police told the BBC, denying allegations that Ms Thunberg’s detainment was fake.

“They had to wait for a couple of minutes before they could bring her to a certain police car,” said the spokesperson.

They added that “the whole situation has been used by those with political motives and the real reason is entirely practical and mundane.”

The BBC dutifully carried water for the German police, describing the event as such:

The viral video shows the climate campaigner flanked by police officers on either side.

Meanwhile a few photographers can be seen snapping photos and moving around her, as Ms Thunberg smiles.

Several other police officers who were also standing nearby appear to be waiting with her before walking her away from the scene.

Some online have jumped onto these moments of officers and Ms Thunberg waiting around, to falsely claim that it is part of a staged photo opportunity.

This appears to be weasel-wording from both the German police and the BBC. Both things can be true at once: That Thunberg was lawfully removed from the protest site – detained, as it were – and that the event was little more than a dressed-up photo op, with unnecessary steps taken to appear more dramatic.

The video clearly shows video teams complete with boom mics to heighten the drama, and shows Thunberg yukking it up with police. The video shows police standing around for extended lengths “holding” Thunberg while the press dutifully snaps photos. Perhaps most tellingly, the BBC themselves used a photo of Thunberg being carried off the ground by several police officers – the photo Thunberg and the press wanted the world to see – while the video shows her calmly walking with police.

Reader, you decide.

***End of Update***

And what risk exactly did Greta take? She’s considered an icon to gullible climate change followers and eager politicians who desire some of the same spotlights Greta receives for themselves. She’s activism royalty.

The Brand

For being 20 years old, Greta has quite the influence over, well, the world, unfortunately. In 2019 she was asked to speak at the World Economic Forum (WEF) Davos event, where she told world leaders and CEOs hot off their private jets that:

“Our house is on fire.”

She was invited back again the following year so that the ego-bloated world elite could receive their masochistic scolding from the young activist as she told them they had basically done nothing to help the planet.

This year she is going to protest the event all while sitting down for a meeting with the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) executive director Fatih Birol, who helps make policy recommendations on global energy.

It should concern everyone that one of the world’s top energy bureaucrats is apparently taking advice from a 20-year-old.

She’s also got quite the collection of children’s books based on her exploits, including:

  • Greta and the Giants
  • Greta’s Story: The schoolgirl who went on strike to save the planet
  • No one is too small to make a difference
  • We are all Greta: Be inspired to save the world

So to say she’s risking anything by her performance activism is a bit of a stretch.

Close Encounters Of The Hedonistic Kind

Greta is endemic to our culture’s need to promote the idea of activism for activism’s sake. We’ve all become very adept at preaching how terrible we are as humans; it’s only a matter of time before we start building altars to our false idols and sacrificing meat eaters to the climate change gods.

Case in point, former Secretary of State and presidential climate envoy, whatever that means, John Kerry.

This week at Davos, Mr. Kerry opined:

“When you start to think about it, it’s pretty extraordinary that we – select group of human beings because of whatever touched us at some point in our lives – are able to sit in a room and come together and actually talk about saving the planet.”

Yes, John, you’re all pretty pretty princes and princesses fighting the good fight for all of us commoners who foolishly require meat, heat, and fuel to survive…all of which, in some fashion, lines your pockets.

He went on:

“I mean, It’s so almost extraterrestrial to think about saving the planet.”

If John Kerry and Greta Thunberg are on a higher plane of universal existence and consciousness than the rest of us, I’m ready for the real aliens to beam me up and take me away.
