Earlier this year, President Obama shamelessly had a bust of former Prime Minister Winston Churchill removed from the Oval Office. At the time, Obama claimed that as the first African American president he wanted to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a bust instead of Winston Churchill.
Well, now that Donald Trump will assume the presidency next year, the bust of Winston Churchill will be proudly returned to the Oval Office, according to Nigel Farage, a British politician who was influential in the Brexit movement.
According to ABC News, former London Mayor Boris Johnson explained why he thought Obama really removed the bust of Churchill:
Writing in U.K. publication The Sun today, London Mayor Boris Johnson pondered that one of the reasons the bust may have been removed from the Oval Office because it is a “a symbol of the part-Kenyan president’s ancestral dislike of the British empire — of which Churchill had been such a fervent defender.”
Johnson’s accusation against the president came in an op-ed in which Johnson rebuked the president for wading into the debate over whether the U.K. should remain a member of the European Union, with a referendum to decide the matter approaching on June 23.
Nigel Farage, who has expressed his support for Trump, explained that the return of Churchill was a “clear sign of his appreciation for the historically warm relationship between the allies.”
In addition, the Ukip leader said “At the end of our time with Trump we asked him if the bust of Sir Winston Churchill that Obama had removed from the Oval Office could be put back in its rightful place. He enthusiastically thought that was a good idea. Need I say more?”
Farage was a valuable supporter for Trump, appearing at multiple rallies and campaign events for the president-elect. It is likely that Farage’s contributions to the Trump campaign helped sway the Republican to reinstall the bust of Winston Churchill in the Oval Office. Unlike Obama, Trump respects the important role Churchill had in the world and the powerful relationship he had with the United States during his tenure as Prime Minister.
