According to a lobbyist for the NRA, President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence have reassured gun owners that they remain committed to “strong due process” and they “don’t want gun control.”
The meeting and alleged comments come shortly after the President sent Second Amendment (and Fifth Amendment for that matter) supporters into a tailspin over statements he made during a gun control meeting with lawmakers.
Trump stunned many observers saying, “Take the guns first, go through due process second.”
The NRA responded by ripping the President for his meeting which they said constituted “great TV,” but “bad policy.”
Good (Great) meeting in the Oval Office tonight with the NRA!

Chris Cox, a top lobbyist for the NRA, said his group had a great meeting in the White House. The executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action tweeted out that both Trump and Pence are firmly committed to supporting the Second Amendment, adding that they “support strong due process and don’t want gun control.”
I had a great meeting tonight with @realDonaldTrump & @VP. We all want safe schools, mental health reform and to keep guns away from dangerous people. POTUS & VPOTUS support the Second Amendment, support strong due process and don’t want gun control. #NRA #MAGA

One hour later, Trump tweeted his agreement that it was a “great meeting.”
An MSNBC contributor claims he spoke with a GOP lobbyist indicating President Trump had been privately reassuring the NRA that he is on their side – a tactic we acknowledged in a previous post.
A GOP lobbyist told me this morning Trump’s only publicly acting like he’s taking on the NRA. Privately, he’s reassuring them he’s on their side. No one-including Ivanka-has any clue what he’s going to do or say next. He’s “completely lost his mind” & we should “expect anything.”

“We understand that President Trump is trying to chide both sides into taking some sort of action, goading them into compromising on gun legislation,” the Political Insider reported. “But those comments about gun confiscation without due process are out of line.”
We’re glad to see the President backtrack on this matter. Now we can move on and try to attain real solutions to protect our children in schools.
