President Trump Donates First Presidential Paycheck to Repair Antietam National Battlefield

President Trump’s first quarter salary is being donated to repair the Antietam National Battlefield – site of the bloodiest one day battle in American history.

The $78,333 donation will go toward restoring the information center and to help reinforce over 5,000 feet of civil war-style fencing.

Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke announced the donation earlier this week, saying “I can find no better investment in our country than our battlefields.”

Via Fox News Insider:

The Interior Department announced that it will be using the $78,333 given to them by President Trump to revitalize an important Civil War landmark, according to the Washington Times.

Earlier this year, Trump promised to donate his salary to various projects and organizations.

He previously presented a check to Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke in April, directing that the funds be used by the National Park Service.

Zinke said he would be using the funds to renovate Maryland’s Antietam Battlefield Park, a few miles outside Harper’s Ferry, W.V.

Another promise kept.

“I won’t take even one dollar,” Trump said regarding his salary on the campaign trail. “I am totally giving up my salary if I become president.”

The National Park Service website describes the importance of the Antietam site:

23,000 soldiers were killed, wounded or missing after twelve hours of savage combat on September 17, 1862. The Battle of Antietam ended the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia’s first invasion into the North and led to Abraham Lincoln’s issuance of the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.

The President’s salary has been matched by a donation of more than $185,880 from three non-profits. The battlefield site was presented with a check in that amount.

In addition to the donations, Zinke announced that $7.2 million in grants from the Department of the Interior will go toward protecting 19 battlefields from the Civil War, Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.

There’d be a 24-hour news feed regarding the donation and a special documentary run regarding his big heart if Obama donated his salary.
