Former top aides Steve Mnuchin and Mike Pompeo reportedly discussed removing President Trump via the 25th Amendment following events at the Capitol on January 6th.
This, according to a new book from ABC News chief Washington correspondent Jonathan Karl titled, “Betrayal.”
Karl writes that Mnuchin, the Treasury Secretary at the time, and Pompeo, the Secretary of State, discussed removing the President.
The reporter, promoting his book during an interview with MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” explained that Pompeo “asked for a legal analysis of the 25th Amendment and how it would work.”
The idea was apparently nixed due to the timeframe required and the legal challenges that would stall it.
“But in the hours after the riot, there were high-level conversations about this,” Karl said.

Pompeo Denies
Karl claimed to the MSNBC hosts that his story is “rock solid” based on “a source familiar with the conversations.”
“I learned that Mnuchin had several conversations about the 25th Amendment and, further, that Mike Pompeo actually asked for a legal analysis of the 25th Amendment and how it would work,” he claims.
Rolling Stone has since said Pompeo’s camp refutes Karl’s account.
They write that “Pompeo through a spokesman denied there have ever been conversations around invoking the 25th Amendment.”

Overreaction
Mnuchin and Pompeo, if this story turns out to be true, now join the ranks of people like Nancy Pelosi and Meghan McCain who overreacted to the events of January 6th.
“I join the Senate Democratic Leader in calling on the Vice President to remove this President by immediately invoking the 25th amendment,” Pelosi said the day after the riot.
McCain became visibly emotional when calling on Republican lawmakers to remove Trump.
“This is one of the great national tragedies of my lifetime, this is one of America’s darkest days,” she said. “I have been absolutely despondent watching this.”

In addition to calls for removing President Trump, Senator Lindsey Graham and Representative Adam Kinzinger both suggested weapons should have been fired at Trump supporters.
“You’ve got guns. Use them,” Graham reportedly yelled to Capitol police officers.
Kinzinger revealed that he considered using his own gun on the rioters.
“They’re going to try to fight and kill me, and I’m not going to let that happen,” Kinzinger said he told himself if the protesters had made it to his office.

The Political Insider reported a day after the January 6 rally that cabinet members had been discussing the 25th Amendment.
CBS News’ Margaret Brennan stated that the concern at the time involved “the potential for insurrections around the country.”

The House eventually impeached President Trump for his alleged role in inciting the riots, but he was ultimately acquitted by the Senate.
