Pelosi Leads Democrats In Candlelight Vigil For ‘Heroes’ On Capitol Steps

Nancy Pelosi held a candlelight vigil to honor the "heroes" of the Capitol on the anniversary of January 6th, none of whom died because of the riot and one who died in April following an attack by a Nation of Islam follower.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi held a candlelight vigil on the Capitol steps along with other Democrats to honor the “heroes” of the Capitol who “lost their lives and sacrificed” on January 6.

“On behalf of the distinguished Democratic leader of the Senate, all of our colleagues from the House and Senate, we prayerfully mark one year since the insurrection, and patriotically honor the heroes who defended the Capitol and our democracy that day,” Pelosi said.

“Let us all here join in a moment of silence in memory of those who lost their lives and sacrificed so much for our democracy that day.”

The display followed earlier comments by Pelosi, who has sought to portray the riot as deadly for police officers.

Make no mistake – police were indeed injured, some very severely, during the riot. However, none were killed by rioters.

Cynics would argue that Pelosi is trying to make the event seem more severe than the reality.

In such an effort, she gets a boost from Bloomberg News. The news company claimed that four officers died “because of January 6th,” and even included a police officer – Billy Evans – who was killed months later by a Nation of Islam follower.

Pelosi had also mentioned Evans in her remarks, with a footnote that Evans died “of a later assault.” That part of her speech is in the video below.

Pelosi’s Prayer Vigil for Capitol Officers

Nancy Pelosi’s efforts to lump together as many Capitol police officers into her moment of silence and prayer vigil is in line with how Democrats have portrayed the event.

However, while all four officers referenced by Pelosi protected the Capitol during their service, none were killed on January 6th.

  • Officer Brian Sicknick died of a stroke the day after the riot and his death was ruled by “natural” causes and not “hastened by an injury.”
  • Officer Jeffrey Smith died on January 15th due to suicide.
  • Officer Howard Liebengood died by suicide on January 9th.

The fourth officer, Billy Evans, died in April – three months after the Capitol riot – at the hands of a 25-year-old black nationalist and follower of the Nation of Islam.

A Cringe-Worthy Display By Any Measure

Pelosi was joined by roughly 100 masked lawmakers during her prayer vigil, including Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL).

The candlelight vigil contained fake candles and a guest singing “God Bless America.”

Radio host Clay Travis mocked the event.

If you thought the prayer vigil was over the top, Pelosi earlier in the day provided an incredibly cringe-worthy moment by having the cast of Hamilton sing via an apparent Zoom call.

Keep in mind while watching this – It is real, and it is spectacular.

It is important to remember that a total of four people died during the Capitol riot, but only unarmed Air Force veteran and avid supporter of former President Trump, Ashli Babbitt was killed.

She was killed by a Capitol police officer.

Babbitt did not receive any mention during the prayer vigil. The cast of Hamilton didn’t sing for her.

Earlier in the day, Vice President Kamala Harris equated the riot at the Capitol to the tragedies of Pearl Harbor and 9/11.
