NYC Becomes First City With Vaccine Requirement For Restaurants, Gyms

On Tuesday, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that his city will become the first major American city to require proof of COVID vaccination for “indoor activities,” like going to gyms and restaurants.

The city will also create a vaccine passport, called “Key to NYC Pass.”

The announcement comes on the heels of de Blasio announcing last month that all city employees would be required to get vaccinated or submit to weekly COVID testing. The new requirement will go into effect on August 16.

De Blasio will issue a mayoral executive order for the requirement in addition to an order from the health commissioner.

Similar requirements have been instituted in France and Italy. Widespread protests against the mandates have broken out across those countries.

Currently, roughly 66% of New Yorkers are vaccinated. De Blasio said of the vaccine requirement, “If you want to participate in our society fully, you’ve got to get vaccinated. It’s time.”

De Blasio defended his mandate saying, “Not everyone is going to agree with this, I understand that. But for so many people, this is going to be the life-saving act.”

Protests Across West Against Vaccine Passports

This past weekend, protest broke out in Paris over vaccine passports for every day activities like dining out and sporting events.

In Verona, Italy, one protester who gave his name only as “Simone” because he did not want to jeopardize his job, said, “We are creating a great inequality between citizens. We will have first-class citizens, who can access public services, the theatre, social life, and second-class citizens, who cannot.”

In both countries, people moved through the streets chanting “Liberty!” In both France and Italy there were tussles with police and a few fires lit.

In Australia, authorities have gone as far as mobilizing the military to patrol the streets. In Sydney, the Australian army is enforcing “stay-at-home” orders after just 13 cases of COVID.

What The Biden Administration Is Saying

Back on this side of the pond, President Joe Biden said on Friday, when asked by reporters if new COVID restrictions might be put in place in response to the increasing number of cases brought on by the delta variant of the virus, Biden said, “In all probability.”

While the President did not go into any details, CDC Director Rochelle Walensky admitted to Fox News on Friday that the administration is looking into the possibility of a vaccine mandate.

Walensky stated, “I am all for more vaccination. But, I have nothing further to say on that except that we are looking into those policies.”
