Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell turned the tables on a media-driven scandal about his ancestors owning slaves, saying it makes him just like Obama.
Earlier this week, NBC News ran a story about McConnell’s great-great-grandfathers owning 14 slaves, opening up a Pandora’s box they’ll eventually regret.
“The two great-great-grandfathers, James McConnell and Richard Daley, owned a total of at least 14 slaves in Limestone County, Alabama — all but two of them female, according to the county ‘Slave Schedules’ in the 1850 and 1860 censuses,” NBC revealed in their “bombshell.”
Tried Painting Him as a Hypocrite
The easily transparent point of the story was to demonstrate that the top Republican must be a hypocrite for having such a dark history while opposing reparations.
The opening paragraph of the story makes that quite clear:
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who said recently he opposes paying government reparations to the descendants of American slaves, has a family history deeply entwined in the issue: Two of his great-great-grandfathers were slave owners, U.S. census records show.
The Washington Post chimed in making the same inference …

The man who earned the name “Cocaine Mitch’ was having none of it.
McConnell was confronted over the report during a Senate leadership press conference on Tuesday, and he responded by pointing out similarities between his complicated ancestral history and that of the liberal media’s favorite muse.
“You know, I found myself once again in the same position as President Obama. We both oppose reparations. And we both are the descendants of slave holders.”

“You know, I find myself once again in the same position as President Obama,” McConnell quipped. “We both oppose reparations and we both are the descendants of slave owners.”
Side note – if reparations ever do go into effect, will Obama have to pay himself?
Obama’s Own History
McConnell, according to reports, is right.
In 2007, a genealogical researcher determined that ancestors on Obama’s mother’s side were slave owners.
“Obama’s ancestors on his white mother’s side appear to have been slave owners,” the Guardian reported. “William Reitwiesner, an amateur genealogical researcher, has published a history of Obama’s mother’s family and discovered that her ancestors have a distinctly shadowy past.”
Michelle too has a history similar to Barack and McConnell’s.
During his “A More Perfect Union” speech in March of 2008, Obama described his wife’s lineage as, “I am married to a black American who carries within her the blood of slaves and slave owners …”
As for reparations, the Associated Press ran a column in 2008 noting that Obama had no interest in pursuing that tactic.
“Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama opposes offering reparations to the descendants of slaves, putting him at odds with some black groups and leaders,” they wrote.
Just like Mitch McConnell.
