Marine Who Criticized Military’s Afghanistan Withdrawal Has Reportedly Been Jailed

Marine Lieutenant Colonel Stuart Scheller, who went viral after criticizing military leaders for last month's withdrawal from Afghanistan, has reportedly been jailed.

Marine Lieutenant Colonel Stuart Scheller, who went viral after criticizing military leaders for last month’s botched withdrawal from Afghanistan, has reportedly been jailed.

Scheller’s father told Task & Purpose that his son had been sent to the brig, while the Marine Corps issued a statement confirming the news.

“Lt. Col. Stuart Scheller Jr. is currently in pre-trial confinement in the Regional Brig for Marine Corps Installations East aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune,” a spokesman told the outlet.

They assured that he would be “afforded all due process.”

Scheller rose to prominence by refusing to stay silent during the Biden administration’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan that led to a suicide bombing that killed 13 service members, and countless Americans being left behind in the Taliban-controlled country.

Marine Stuart Scheller Jailed

Scheller, according to an NBC News report, was relieved of duty late last month for daring to demand accountability from military leaders following the terror attack.

Scheller had posted a viral video demanding answers from his superiors.

“I’m not making this video because it is potentially an emotional time,” he said.

“I’m making it because I have a growing discontent and contempt with my perceived ineptitude at the foreign policy level,” he continued. “I want to specifically ask some questions to some of my senior leaders.”

“People are upset because their senior leaders let them down and none of them are raising their hands accepting accountability,” Scheller said.

Scheller released several subsequent videos, including one which mentioned he was under orders not to speak on social media.

“What happens when all you do is speak truth and no one wants to hear it? But they can probably stop listening because… I’m crazy… right?” Scheller wrote in one post.

“Col Emmel please have the MPs waiting for me at 0800 on Monday. I’m ready for jail.”

It would seem Scheller knew by violating the gag order he was risking jail time.

Accountability

To my knowledge, this Marine remains the only individual punished in any manner over events stemming from the Afghanistan withdrawal.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley, and head of U.S. Central Command Gen. Kenneth McKenzie are currently testifying before Congress regarding the chaotic withdrawal.

These leaders are likely to be questioned over a drone strike by the United States that killed 10 civilians, including an aid worker and 7 children.

Will any of them resign or be fired? Will any of them meet the same fate Scheller has?

“All our son did is ask the questions that everybody was asking themselves, but they were too scared to speak out loud,” Scheller’s disheartened father said.

“He was asking for accountability,” he continued in his statement to Task & Purpose. “In fact, I think he even asked for an apology that we made mistakes, but they couldn’t do that, which is mind-blowing.”

Scheller said he had been ordered to undergo a mental health screening following his demands for accountability.

Days after his original video went viral and led to his being relieved of command, Scheller announced he was resigning his commission and walking away from a $2 million pension after 17 years of service.
