Liberal Columnist Rips Durbin for ‘Back of the Bus’ Comments

Washington Post writer and MSNBC contributor Jonathan Capehart took Senator Dick Durbin to task for his incredibly inappropriate comments about Republicans delaying confirmation of Loretta Lynch for Attorney General.

Durbin (D-IL) went off the rails in his statements on the House floor earlier this week, saying the GOP was blocking the nomination of the first African-American woman as Attorney General based on her skin color, drawing a parallel to civil rights activist Rosa Parks.

He argued that “There is no substantive reason to stop this nomination.”

Durbin then claimed “the first African-American woman nominated to be attorney general, is asked to sit in the back of the bus when it comes to the Senate calendar.”

Capehart, who was filling in for Chris Matthews on Hardball, played the clips of Durbin and others responding to it, then began the conversation with his panel by simply asking, “What the hell is he doing?”

The Democrat strategist on the panel tried to defend Durbin, saying his comments were “legitimate,” while Michael Steele explained that he was “full of crap” for making those “absolutely ludicrous” comments.

By the way, the man that accused Republicans of putting Loretta Lynch in the back of the bus? He actually – using his own words – put Condoleezza Rice in the back of the bus, voting against her confirmation during the 40th anniversary of the March on Selma.

It has to be pretty reprehensible when you’ve got liberal columnists and other media members unanimously denouncing your racial rhetoric.

So readers, we ask you – What the hell is Senator Durbin doing?
