Google Announces It Will Stop Donating To Republicans Who Objected To 2020 Election Results

On Monday, Google announced that donations to lawmakers who objected to certifying the 2020 presidential election have been suspended.

Google spokesperson José Castañeda said to The Hill, “Following that review, the NetPAC board has decided that it will not be making any contributions this cycle to any member of Congress who voted against the certification of the election results.”

In the 2020 election cycle, Google donated to five Democrats who objected to the 2016 results.

For Google, Objecting Now Comes With Consequences

This comes in the wake of other Big Tech companies also saying they would suspend donations to these particular members of Congress who objected to some of the electors.

Facebook said that for the first quarter of 2021 it would suspend their contributions to those candidates.

Microsoft said it would stop donating to politicians until February 15th, when it will be determined if the company should suspend contributions to the Republicans that objected certifying the 202 election results.

Amazon, AT&T, and Comcast have also threatened to stop donations.

Sen. Hawley: ‘It Will Get Worse’

Republican Senator Josh Hawley helped lead the effort to object to the certification of Pennsylvania’s electoral votes.

On Tuesday, Hawley claimed Big Tech companies had created a “social credit system” to tamp down on free speech. 

Hawley said, “It will get worse. The tech titans have already booted dozens of conservatives off social media, and if they have their way, half the House Republican conference will be expelled from Congress.”

“The corporate titans seem to believe that the only way to get a democracy to their liking is to eliminate all threats to the Democratic Party’s unified control of government,” Hawley added.

Hawley continued, “And if ever our political organizing were impeded by censorship — say, by the big tech giants — we could build our own platforms.”

The GOP senator said the left was pulling out all the stops to censor conservatives.

“But the left and the corporations are challenging all of this now,” Hawley claimed. “Your ‘conservative’ social platform isn’t worth much when Amazon can shut it down.”

“Your vote may still be yours, but if your party is denied the means to effectively organize by corporate monopolies, it’s not going to win,” Hawley added.

“Your church, well, you can still attend for now, but go to the wrong church and you may not have a job in a few years.”

Sen. Hawley paints a dark picture, but it is not without warrant based on concerning recent trends.

Objecting To Electoral Certification Not New

While Republicans have been targeted for objecting to certification in the 2020 election, little has been said about past efforts from Democrats.

Democrats objected to certification in 2000.

Democrat Senator Barbara Boxer objected to Ohio’s 2004 electoral votes.

Joe Biden chastised Democrats Jim McGovern and Jamie Raskin in 2016 when they objected. Other Democrats who objected include Barbara Lee, Sheila Jackson Lee, Raul Grijalva, and Maxine Waters.

In the 2020 cycle, Google donated $5,000 to Barbara Lee, $4,000 to Raskin, $2,000 to Waters, $2,000 to Jackson Lee, and $1,000 to Grijalva.
