The Orpheum Theatre in Memphis is cancelling a long-standing tradition to screen the classic Gone With the Wind following complaints the movie is ‘insensitive.’
The establishment had a 34-year history of including the film, starring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh, as part of its summer movie series.
Board members have determined they will remove it from next year’s series following a final airing on August 11th, and comments from the public that deemed the movie too sympathetic to the South.
And, of course, a movie made in 1939 portraying events from the Civil War era can’t simply be a source of entertainment or an opportunity to discuss America’s past – it has to be labeled racist and erased from public discourse.

The board of directors of the Orpheum Theatre Group in Memphis, Tennessee has decided to end a 34-year tradition of screening “Gone with the Wind” because the board says the movie is now “insensitive.”
Board members announced the plan to remove the 1939 epic from The Orpehum’s 2018 summer movie series on Friday, reports Memphis CBS affiliate WREG-TV.
“As an organization whose stated mission is to ‘entertain, educate and enlighten the communities it serves,’ the Orpheum cannot show a film that is insensitive to a large segment of its local population,” board members said in a statement.

Aside from the ample and easy mockery of the left, there’s this little irony – Gone With the Wind actress Hattie McDaniel became the first African-American to win an Academy Award.
She took home the Best Supporting Actress award for her role as Mammy in the 1939 classic.
McDaniel appeared in over 300 films and has two stars on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood. Now, the film that earned her race-barrier-breaking notoriety will be slowly phased out of America’s consciousness.
What a shame.
