Sure the above headline reads like it’s straight out of The Onion, but it’s quite real.
An actual descendant of the 17th century Powhatan princess Pocahontas, Debbie ‘White Dove’ Porreco, is joining an ever-growing chorus of people challenging Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) to take a DNA test and prove her claimed Native Amercian ancestry.
Warren claimed that heritage – part Cherokee – when she entered biographical information into a job database for law professors in the 1980s. It helped launch her career.
“I respect Senator Warren as a U.S. senator … but I just wish she’d take the DNA test,” Porreco told Fox News host, Tucker Carlson.
“If she was American Indian, I would be the first one to welcome her into our heritage,” she added.
Seems simple enough.

Porreco indicated that conducting such a test would “end a lot of this controversy” about whether or not she is part Native American, and whether or not her career was wrongfully elevated by being spotlighted as a minority hire at Harvard.
She also implored Warren to stop whining that the name “Pocahontas” is in any way a racial slur, as the Senator has alleged when President Trump pokes fun at her.

Trump more recently referred to Warren as Pocahontas at an event honoring Native American veterans.
“Donald Trump just couldn’t make it through without adding a racist slur to the event,” she responded.
Porreco disagrees, saying the name is not, nor should it be, considered a “racial slur,” and she is most definitely not offended by the comment.
In previous interviews, Porreco has said: “If Pocahontas were alive today, she would be very proud of President Trump.”
The descendant of the Powhatan princess isn’t the first to suggest a DNA test.

Independent U.S. Senate candidate Shiva Ayyadurai has been relentlessly hounding Warren over her false claims. His campaign slogan is itself a direct shot at Warren – “Only a real Indian can defeat a fake Indian.”
Ayyadurai actually sent her a DNA test in the mail.
Even a liberal newspaper in her home state, the Berkshire Eagle, has declared it’s time for Warren to either put up or shut up when it comes to claims of Native American heritage.
Their advice was simple: “Spit into a tube, wait a few weeks, and get her answer.”

Warren, knowing she can’t back up her claim unless she does indeed conduct a DNA test, has explained: “You won’t find my family members on any rolls, and I’m not enrolled in a tribe.”
But she insists, “I never used my family tree to get a break or get ahead. I never used it to advance my career.”
