Hours after President-elect Donald J. Trump announced he was selecting Congressman Tom Price to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, we have just learned that he is expected to choose former Labor Secretary Elaine Chao as head of the Department of Transportation.
Chao, who is married to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, met with Trump at Trump Tower last week to discuss labor and transportation policy and is likely a safe confirmation by the Senate.
Chao is the first Asian-American woman to ever hold a cabinet position, serving for President George W. Bush. She also served as Deputy Secretary of Transportation for President George H.W. Bush and was a member of Trump’s Asian Pacific American Advisory Council.

Chao’s husband is considered the ultimate Washington insider, and is strongly disliked by members of the Tea Party and grassroots conservatives. Those who are not loyal to McConnell may oppose Chao’s likely nomination as they may feel she and her husband do not represent the values of Trump and his supporters.
