Dr. Anthony Fauci Says New York Data Might Project Coronavirus Turnaround

On Monday, Dr. Anthony Fauci said that new data from New York is showing promising signs pointing toward a turnaround in that city’s coronavirus pandemic.

‘Everybody…knows that I am very conservative about making projections, but those are the kind of good signs that you look for’

Fauci noted that over the last three days, the amount of hospitalizations and admissions to intensive care had leveled off, numbers that were also shared Monday with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

“Everybody who knows me knows that I am very conservative about making projections, but those are the kind of good signs that you look for,” Fauci said. “That’s the first thing you see when you start to see the turnaround.”

Fauci said this was by no means the time to declare victory, but noted that current practices might be working. He was more optimistic, an outlook also expressed by President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, and Gov. Cuomo, due to these numbers.

“We hope we are seeing a leveling off in the hottest spots of them all. So we will see,” Trump said at the briefing, referring to New York. “You will see it over the next few days. Let’s see what happens. But we are prepared.”

Cautious But Optimistic

Fauci said he believes if Americans continued to practice the federal guidelines, other big cities could avoid the same fate as New York City.

The doctor praised Americans for their social mitigating practices.

“I don’t think anyone has ever mitigated the way I’m seeing people mitigate right now,” Fauci said, adding he was “cautiously optimistic” about bringing the number of expected deaths down.

Dr. Deborah Brix cautioned that sometimes weekend numbers were “difficult” to interpret.

“I want to be clear on that because sometimes case reporting is not as accurate over the weekend so we’ll be watching closely today’s numbers and Tuesday’s numbers,” she noted.

Meanwhile, Vice President Pence was cautious but optimistic.

“The experts told us that somewhere around the middle of this month would be the peak and as we begin to see a couple of days that might be the beginning of leveling, we’re going to watch that carefully and we’re going to bring that information to the president,” Pence said.
