Documents Show White House Gun Control Proposal Includes Universal Background Check

Many Second Amendment advocates’ worst fear regarding the White House and Department of Justice’s gun control proposals might be coming true: Universal background checks.

Universal Background Checks are Clearly in the White House and DOJ Document

It is clear in this document that both the White House and DOJ are using the Manchin-Toomey gun control bill as their template. It reads (emphasis added), “Consistent with the Manchin-Toomey-draft legislation, a background check requirement would be extended to all commercial sales, including sales at gun shows.”

The verbage shows the type pf background checks Manchin-Toomey sought, which were universal background checks coming into play with the issuance of a “bill of sale” and the preservation of a “chain of title.” Those selling firearms might have a number of options, including preserving a record of the sale or perhaps allowing a Federal Firearm License holder to record the exchange.

After CNN’s Eliana Plott posted the document, she received an update from the White House that indicated that although WhiteHouse legislative director Eric Ueland was indeed sharing the gun control document, it did not necessarily mean President Donald Trump supported the gun control measures described in it.

‘Very meaningful background checks’

When Trump promised “very meaningful background checks” in August after deadly mass shootings in Texas and Ohio, the National Rifle Association and other Second Amendment advocates immediately voiced their disapproval. At the time, the President appeared to walk back his statement.

Trump said he was “very, very concerned with the Second Amendment, more so than most presidents would be,” and added that “people don’t realize we have very strong background checks right now.”

“I don’t want people to forget that this is a mental health problem,” the president added. “I don’t want them to forget that, because it is. It’s a mental health problem.”

Republican Pushback

Republican Congressman Thomas Massie and Jim Jordan wrote an op-ed explaining why universal background checks and other new gun control legislation won’t work in stopping mass shootings.

Massie tweeted an excerpt after it was published last month, ”Universal background checks, red flag laws and the so-called assault weapons ban all have two things in common: They won’t stop mass public shootings, and they will infringe on constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens.”

But now that we see the White House and DOJ proposals, will President Trump stand firm and stand up for the Second Amendment?

Or will he bow to the pressure?
