Workers For Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders Claim They Were Sexually Harassed On Campaign Trail

clinton sanders sexual harassment

Just days after Democratic Sen. Al Franken was accused of sexual assault, two women who worked on the Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders 2016 presidential campaigns have claimed they were harassed while campaigning for their respective candidates, and that both campaigns were “ill-equipped” to address the claims.

Lilian Adams, who relocated to Colorado to work on the Clinton campaign as a paid organizer, told HuffPost that she was subject to homophobic remarks and lewd comments about her body, including attempts by her harasser to convince her to stop wearing bras. Adams, who was 19 at the time, also claims her abuser attempted to force her into one-on-one situations and drink alcohol.

Adams says that her harasser was eventually fired after she complained to her superiors in June – only to be rehired again in October to work for the campaign in a different state.

Remember: Hillary Clinton ran on a feminist platform, but apparently her campaign had no problem turning a blind eye on harassment within their ranks.

Zoey Jordan Salsbury also told HuffPost that she experienced harassment while working as a volunteer as president of American University Students for Bernie. Salsbury claims that a campaign intern made unwanted advances toward her, but the campaign had no protocol for dealing with issues among volunteers. Salsbury, who was 18 at the time of the alleged harassment, blamed “a culture that didn’t discuss office policies with volunteers or make it clear that harassment wasn’t tolerated.”

Further, Salsbury says she was contacted by a Sanders campaign lawyer this week, and their conversation “firmly felt like the kind of call you make when you’re trying to feel out if someone has the interest and/or standing to bring a lawsuit.”

So standing up for women is fine – until it affects your presidential chances.

Unsurprisingly, Clinton didn’t respond to request for comment from HuffPost. Sanders’s office, however, admitted that campaign volunteers were not given information on the harassment reporting process.
