In what can only be described as a political stunt, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra has blocked travel by state employees to four states over perceived anti-LGBT laws.
Becerra added Texas, Alabama, South Dakota, and Kentucky to a list that already included a ban on travel to North Carolina, Kansas, Mississippi, and Tennessee.
Cutting off contact with 16% of the country should do wonders for California’s economy. Not to mention isolating itself from nearly one-fifth of the country seems … what’s the word? Intolerant?

California’s attorney general blocked state-funded travel to Texas and three other states on Thursday in response to what he considers anti-LGBT rights laws enacted this year.
Democratic Attorney General Xavier Becerra added Texas, Alabama, South Dakota and Kentucky to the list of places where state employee travel is restricted. Lawmakers passed legislation last year banning non-essential travel to states with laws that discriminate against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. North Carolina, Kansas, Mississippi and Tennessee are already on the list.
California taxpayers’ money “will not be used to let people travel to states who chose to discriminate,” Becerra said.
It should be made clear that the ban is completely meaningless, a symbolic gesture to bolster support from the LGBT community to use as future electoral capital.
Becerra is trying to flesh out his progressive credentials by enacting a completely unoriginal tactic.
New York’s governor, Andrew Cuomo, had this idea a long time ago, demonstrating his concern for universal access to bathrooms over the concerns of his own citizens by banning travel to Indiana and North Carolina.
About the most upsetting thing to come out of Cuomo’s ban was the fact that SUNY Albany had to cancel a basketball game against Duke.
Becerra is a raging hypocrite on this matter, having joined President Obama on a travel excursion to Cuba just last year.
Cuba, you may know, is a country notorious for their poor civil and human rights record.
Cuba has no anti-discrimination laws currently regarding the provisions of goods and services. None. They have no anti-discrimination laws regarding hate speech against particular groups. But they do have a constitutional ban against same-sex marriage.
It’s astounding that California would be a big fan of the Cuban regime and their anti-LGBT laws, but not of a good percentage of American states that simply want equality for all groups.
