As President Trump gave his speech from the Oval Office Tuesday night, telling the country that America’s borders need protecting and the government shutdown stems from Democrats’ refusal to fund a border wall, media fact checkers had a field day.
Of course, much of the fact checking had a liberal slant, as one might expect, but the Associated Press (AP) – considered one of the most reliable mainstream news sources by many – had a tidbit many liberals might not like.
After doing some fact checking on Trump’s statements about drugs coming across the border, the need for a wall and other items, the Associated Press set its sights on Democrat claims that the federal government shutdown is entirely Trump’s fault.
AP FACT CHECK: Democrats put the blame for the shutdown on Trump. But it takes two to tango. Trump's demand for $5.7 billion for his border wall is one reason for the budget impasse. The Democrats refusal to approve the money is another. https://t.co/9IWnqUgl2d

“It takes two sides to shut down the government”
AP shared Rep. Pelosi’s rebuttal remarks:”HOUSE SPEAKER NANCY PELOSI: ‘The fact is: President Trump has chosen to hold hostage critical services for the health, safety and well-being of the American people and withhold the paychecks of 800,000 innocent workers across the nation – many of them veterans.”
AP shared Sen. Schumer’s rebuttal remarks: “SEN. CHUCK SCHUMER, Senate Democratic leader: ‘The president of the United States – having failed to get Mexico to pay for his ineffective, unnecessary border wall, and unable to convince the Congress or the American people to foot the bill – has shut down the government.”
But then concluded this:
THE FACTS: That’s one way to look at it. But it takes two sides to shut down the government. Trump’s demand for $5.7 billion for his border wall is one reason for the budget impasse. The refusal of Democrats to approve the money is another.
And that is the plain fact: “It takes two sides to shut down the government.”
Democrats can try to put the blame on President Trump all they want, but the fact remains that they’re refusal to sign off on border wall funding is why the federal government is in a partial shutdown at the moment.
It’s also not as if Democrats have always been opposed to a wall, fence or some type of barrier along the U.S.-Mexico border. It wasn’t long ago that top Democrats cared about border security.
Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer and their leftist friends are as much to blame for the shutdown as the President. Don’t expect to hear much of this from the liberal media.
Kudos to the Associated Press for being honest about it.
