Nay, it’s shameful that A) AOC thinks her constituents would rather milk the system than obtain employment when they’re capable and B) AOC would link her family story to something that wouldn’t even apply in this case.

The Heritage Foundation quickly called Ocasio-Cortez out for her, um … embellishment.

I am not without compassion for the poor. I have run a food bank for over thirty years and my conservative friends and I even buy a good portion of the food ourselves. We have 50 to 60 families we give groceries to each week.
What people don’t understand is that when people take advantage of the system they are not stealing from the rich, but from the people who REALLY need the food….usually seniors and vets. I am thrilled to see that the Trump Administration is taking steps to correct these abuses. My biggest obstacle is the government. They impose ridiculous rules requiring us to give (any gov supplied) food to people who do NOT need the help or are already visiting multiple food banks. (We can only use our judgment on privately donated food.) The SNAP Program needs to be revised.

If you lived in the real world, you would see that people receiving food stamps have it better that the ones that really need it. There should be restrictions. A person in real need of food would purchase food. But everyday food stamps are wasted on candy, soft drinks, bakery cakes, yes…. as much as 50.00 for a pre-made Birthday cake at a bakery. Actually seen a sign outside of a Bakery, which had stated. Only one purchase a day with food stamps. What about making a cake and spending the rest on food and what about the cash side of the card they use. Then they turn around and take advantage of churches, organizations that help the needy. Yeah. I learned awhile ago on this site that once I hit that “Post” button the only way I can edit it is to remove it and rewrite it. Sometimes I just do what you did… write another sentence or two making the corrections to the original post in a separate post. It’s a pain, at best.
I recall living on the edge of poverty when I was a young pup who just got out of the Army and was attending college on the G.I. bill, most of which went for college tuition, books and supplies. I worked two jobs, both part time, both menial labor and crammed four years of school into two and a half. I also got married part way through that stint and joined a local law enforcement agency who paid less per month than I made working the part time jobs. Either way, I made it because I wanted to. I didn’t get any help from anyone else. I paid my rent, groceries, utilities, gas for my car in cash and between my wife and I we made a combined monthly income that was less than the “poverty” level at the time… but we made it work without subsistence, etc. Our children didn’t die, things worked out. We didn’t expect anyone else to carry our load for us. Why would we even consider that?! If we couldn’t afford it we didn’t buy it. I hunted and fished for most of our meat. We raised veggies and quit frankly, it was simpler and seemingly more rewarding back then than it is now. We knew everything we acquired, everything we ate was earned…
Today? We’re comfortably retired and riding out our lives into the next challenge, the next chapter. Whenever, wherever that will happen.

What a shame because they didn’t have anything and they paid their bills on the first of the month then sat there for 29 days to do it all over again. I made a mistake but I sat there for 2 years promising myself it would never happen again. All I had ask God was to let me get a job and just be an honest tax paying citizen but it’s been so much more then that. I got out of prison in 2010 for a drug change and I got food stamps and a medical card for my first year that I was out. I got job so no longer needed them and have been working every since. When people receive welfare and other benefits from the government they tell you who can live with you. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), which funded an analysis by Mathematica, said the vast majority of the 1.2 million SNAP participants living in waiver areas who don’t have a disability, don’t live with children and aren’t working the required average of 20 hours per week are “in deep poverty and live alone.”
Wouldn’t it be less cruel to help these people find work so that they no longer qualified for SNAP benefits than just cut them off, despite their lack of an income?
We gave huge tax cuts to billionaires but now are ready to deprive people in deep poverty of food?
AOC is quick to read headlines, bother not to read the content, and more, chances are her family is like any other Latino one, a single house shelters several able body adults, same ones that, surely, can, and have, employment off the books. Not forgetting to mention how many of them are assiduous visitors of how many churches/places that provide food “for the poor” on a weekly basis> Making AOC claims of “starving” a bunch of crap.
Plus, again, anybody living in Yorktown can not call themselves short on means.
The simple fact that she got enough votes for her to be in COngress ought to be warning enough, for working, productive Americans of the kind of entitled minded people filling neighborhoods.
No better time than now to halt its growth.
