Ann Romney Takes Feminists to Task for Ignoring Sexist Slur Against Republican Governor

Ann Romney rushed to South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley’s defense yesterday against a disgusting sexual remark from her opponent. Democrat challenger Vincent Sheheen had a Freudian slip at a recent campaign event, saying of Haley, “We are going to escort whore out the door,” before correcting himself with “her” but knowingly laughing and playing up the mistake with the audience. Ann Romney expressed her outrage at the sexist comment and lack of reaction to it by feminists and the media to CNN:

“When I first heard about it, it hit me right in my gut,” Romney said in a Monday phone interview with CNN. “My nerve endings went haywire. It’s so upsetting when you know someone can say something like that about a woman, and not have any kind of reaction. It’s so unacceptable. Nikki is a great girl and has been a great governor.” …

“We need to make sure we have a safe place so that other women can feel like they can do this and these kinds of things aren’t going to happen to them,” Romney said. “You get so sick of saying there is bias out there, but if a Republican had said this, it would be blowing up in their face like nobody’s business. Where is EMILY’s List? Where is N.O.W.? Where are they?”

Indeed. If the awkward phrase “binders full of women” could be made into a campaign issue and “take our country back” twisted into a racist dog whistle, then “escort whore” should be considered fighting words in the War on Women. Instead … crickets because it is a minority woman with an R next to her name.

Good for Ann Romney for calling out the bias on CNN!
