**UPDATE** It appears Bentley has been booked on charges and has officially resigned.

Alabama Governor Robert Bentley has been under fire. The Alabama Ethics Commission found reason to believe he committed four felony crimes, and he’s in serious trouble.

The focus is on an improper relationship with Rebekah Caldwell Mason, his senior political advisor.

Now, he will resign:

It Is becoming clear that Robert Bentley will not last the week as governor.

Sources in Montgomery say his lawyers have been involved in negotiations to step down from the governorship and plead to lesser charges, allowing Lt. Gov. Kay Ivey to step up as governor.

Sources believe he will resign the governorship by Wednesday.

Bentley has been under fire for the better part of the year but pressure over the last several days has mounted to untenable heights.

Governor Bentley was recorded by his wife having conversations with Mason, where he described sexual activity. And he allegedly demanded that Mason be allowed to travel in official vehicles after leaving the state payroll, then supposedly used a bodyguard to break up with her.

Starting in 2013, according to Bentley’s now ex-wife, Dianne, Mason began staying overnight in the pool house of the governor’s mansion, an arrangement that raised eyebrows in Montgomery.

At first, Dianne Bentley excused the frequent sleepovers, according to the report. Mason’s home with her husband, the head of the governor’s Office of Faith Based and Community Initiatives, was in Tuscaloosa, nearly a two-hour drive from the state capitol in Montgomery. But the first lady of Alabama, a devout Christian who would write prayer requests for her husband on sticky notes that she kept in her personal devotional, was eventually informed by Heather Hannah, her chief of staff, that the governor and Mason would “jump” when interrupted by other members of his staff and that he would return home from work with makeup on his shirts.

The governor’s wife and Hannah were among the more than 20 witnesses interviewed by the special counsel appointed by the Alabama House Judiciary Committee. The report is based on their testimony, as well as a review of more than 10,000 pages of documents, text message transcripts, and emails.

Other members of the governor’s staff began to notice Bentley’s increasingly close relationship with his chief adviser. According to the House committee’s report, Bentley would call Mason “baby” in meetings, and Ray Lewis, the leader of Bentley’s security detail, told the House committee that he had once observed Mason leaving the governor’s office with tousled hair, her outfit disheveled.

This is the type of behavior former President Bill Clinton took part in throughout his long career. But Republicans are held to a higher moral standard, and it’s clear that Governor Bentley’s actions were unacceptable.

Ironically, or perhaps not, Bentley made a big to-do during the 2016 Presidential election campaign, saying he would not support fellow Republican Donald Trump, over comments Trump made towards women.

    The underlying substantive criminal charges appear to be use of state resources to cover up his affair. The actual procedural criminal charges are failing to file a couple disclosures.

    Republicans are properly held to a higher standard. We are the ones who insist on a social conservative agenda, with appropriate bowing before traditional moral standards. If Republicans have been elected preaching that agenda and those standards and engage in this kind of misconduct after election, then they should go willingly. In other words, they consider us rubes, they lie to us frequently because they know they can usually get away with that, and we believe the lies: “oh, he’s such a good Christian man.” When a politician brags about his Christianity, run for the hills with one hand on your wallet.

    Democrats are not held to these standards, because they do not preach them with one exception: when a Republican gets in trouble for violating them. When they do, their base voters know they are lying (or at least not serious) and it angers Republican voters — against the Republican elected official. Just the outcome Dems hoped for.

    The governor cheated on his wife at public expense. That sort of behavior by Trump is acceptable to his supporters. Why have different standard for Bentley?
    If every guy who had sex outside of marriage voted Democrat, the Republicans couldn’t win local dog catcher. Most of the guys who followed Trump’s lead in grabbing pussy just haven’t been caught.

    You expect the people you elect to have good morals and doing what he did was forbidden. He didn’t have respect for his marriage and family. If someone does something against the norm of good Christian morals then they can’t be trusted by the populace.

    He is a republican ,however all he did was bang another women while in office ..who care about that not me.I don’t care one iota who a man bangs while in office or if he is married to any one or not married. Just as long as they give me what I sent them there for they can do what ever they like.To many people mix their ideology in politics and, politics has none it is about winning and sometimes you have to play dirty people that are willing to play that way dont have the same moral code as does most folks. For instance Reagan everyone looks to him and says what a great man. Well that man was willing to sell arms to Iran and drugs to south east LA to raise money to fight the contra’s in in central america because congress would not give him the money however most republican over look that when they Reagan was a great man and one of the best presidents we have had. I put myself in that boat,but he did what he had to do to ,to complete his mission. Like I said earlier sometimes people that are in politics dont go by the same moral code or if they even have one. The point is do they do what you sent them there to do.

      Sorry I do not claim to be a perfect angel myself as God knows. But I cannot condone a married man screwing around on his wife. I would not trust a person like that to run the country or state.

      Because there is a consistency in a person’s life condition, immorality will carry over from personal life to public life. Since this governor purports to be a christian, that is a grossly immoral act. And it seems that he has allowed political funds and certain political perks to further and hide his behavior. You may not care, but if he is screwing her, he will just as easily screw you. Not the type of guy you want to be in charge of a state, or any level of government for that matter.

    Ironically Hillary claimed to represent women yet she did everything in her power to destroy the women who had the audacity to stand up for themselves against Bill – the no less than 16 women who have accused him of rape – and that may be just the ones brave enough to have come forward.
    Hillary Clinton told us she represents children yet she is deeply embedded with Planned Parenthood who has been accused of harvesting body parts from aborted almost full term babies for profit. Hillary Clinton has also been exposed by a computer seized from Huma Abedin/Anthony Weiner’s home by the NYPD – that computer was said to have evidence that Hillary made at least 6 trips to Jeffery Epstein’s “Pleasure Island” for orgies with trafficked and run-away underaged girls.

    I don’t care if they are Republicans, Democrats, movie stars – popular athletes – what ever- they should ALL be made to face the music for these charges. If guilty – off to jail. All it takes for evil to win is for good men to do nothing!

    If he would have just claimed that he was a Democrat Socialist following his mentor “Bill
    (Da Humper) Clinton and trying to emulate his antics. The News Papers would have ignored
    the story and buried it so no one would notice it. But, since he is a Republican they would have
    attacked him if he passed gas in public by accident. Difference between Morals and total
    lack there of. But the bottom line is he cheated, got caught and is embarrassed in public and
    will lose his job as a result.
